BENJAMIN FRANKLIN
CONAWAY was a farmer in Calhoun, Gordon
County, Georgia. The record books show Lot 160 - 14th section, 3rd district.
1870 - BENJAMIN F. CONAWAY sold (or deeded) North half to Octavia A. Thornbrough,
Price - $300. December 19, 1870. December 19, 1870 - Octavia Thornbrough deeded
South half lot 160-14-3 to BENJAMIN F. CONAWAY. Price $300.
BENJAMIN F. CONAWAY enlisted in the Army on January 29, 1863,
for 3 years or the war - at Calhoun, Georgia, under Captain C. W. Howard. He was
a Private in the 63rd Ga. Regt. On July 18, 1863, he was wounded at battery
Wagner, Morris Island, S. C. On October 17, 1863, he was absent for sick leave
for 20 days. He was admitted to Ocmulgee Hospital, Macon Ga., June 14, 1864, for
Chronic Diarrhea. Dispositioned - 60 days. On June 28, 1864, he was furloughed
to Gordon County, Georgia - his residence. He was captured April 12, 1865, at
Salisbury, S. C. by forces under Major General Thomas commanding Dept. of the
Cumberland at Nashville, Tenn, and forwarded to Capt. C. B. Pratt at Louisville,
Ky., on April 29, 1865. He was transferred May 1, 1865, and arrived at Camp
Chase, Ohio, May 4, 1865. On June 13, 1865, B. F. CONAWAY signed an Oath
of Allegiance to the US at Camp Chase, Ohio. His place of residence was listed
as Gordon Co., Georgia; Complexion - dark; hair - grey; eyes - blue; height
5'7"; age 39 years.
On May 8, 1880, B. F. CONAWAY died of Tuberculosis. His
wife, HELENA MCKENZIE WALKER died on December 39,
1879, of bronchitis. Four of their children came to Texas, but the youngest
daughter remained in Georgia where she also died of Tuberculosis. Census records
indicate that son Marshall Clint Conaway was a farmer.

The boys of Warren County, who were enlisting in the second company from the
county, met under the oak tree in the corner of the Methodist Church yard, next
to the home of Col. E. P. Davis, on August 6, 1861. They boarded the mule car at
the station where the church now stands and were drawn to Camak where they
entrained for Augusta. Arriving at the City they were met by Capt. James A.
Gardner, a commission merchant and cotton buyer, who presented them with a large
silk Confederate flag and they selected the name "The Gardner
volunteers." Below is the muster roll of the "Gardner
Volunteers," Company "H" 22nd Ga. Regiment.

and Octavia A. Thornbrough of the same place of the other part witnesseth that
for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred dollars to him in hand paid
the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath bargained and sold and by these
presents doth Revise release and for ever quit claim to the said Octavia A.
Thornbrough her heirs and assigns all the right title interest claim or demand
the said B. F. CONAWAY has or may have had in and to the north half of lot of
land Number one hundred and sixty (160) in the (14th) fourteenth District Third
(3) section of the county aforesaid containing Eighty acres more or less with
all the rights numbers & appurtenances to said half lot of land in any wise
appertaining or belonging. To have and to hold the said North half of lot of
land to the said Octavia A. Thornbrough her heirs and assigns so that neither
the said B. F. CONAWAY nor his heirs nor any other person or persons claiming
under him shall at any time hereafter by any way or means have claim or demands
any right title or interest in or to the said North half of lot of lands or its
appurtenances or any part thereof in Testimony where of the said B. F. CONAWAY

Octavia A. Thornbrough of the County and State Aforesaid of the one part and
