Autosomal DNA

Based on the autosomal DNA results of Henry Blankensein and 2 cousins, it has been proven that the family of Planter John Lewis descends from both the Zachary Lewis and the Warner Hall Lewis family lines.  That would explain why the names in both the Zachary Lewis family and the Warner Hall Lewis family are represented in the Planter John Lewis line through several generations and why the Owen Lewis family (son of Planter John Lewis) claimed descent from Zachary Lewis the Immigrant.  That speculative connection is documented in many of the older genealogy books on the early Lewis ancestors but was never proven.

While autosomal DNA is very valuable in tying families together, it does not give specifics as to the individuals that match.  The amount of DNA shared between 2 individuals of the same line gives approximation as to the generation where they connect to their common ancestor.  This is not considered proof of a specific ancestor as with traditional DNA research, but it does prove that the 2 individuals that matched have a common ancestor.  When the early documentation is not available, autosomal DNA can be invaluable in putting lines together and understanding the various naming patterns.

The lesser the amount of matching centimorgans (cM) between 2 people – the further back the match.  Charts that help with this process indicate that a match of 6 to 20 cMs means the person you match is most likely your 5th to 8th cousin – indicating a match with a common ancestor 6 to 9 generations back (or a common ancestor at the 4th to 7th great grandparent level).

Henry Blankenstein who descends through the Planter John Lewis line matched with multiple people claiming descendant from:

Zachary Lewis Line having between 6.4 cM and 14.8 cM – more toward the higher end

Warner Hall Lewis Line having between 6.1 cM and 13.3 cM – more about in the middle range

Owen Lewis (father of Planter John) had children named Elizabeth, Sarah, Anne, John.  Owen Lewis (son of Planter John) introduced the name Nicholas, Robert, and William. All of those names can be seen through the Warner Hall Lewis line.  The next generations added the name Meriwether which married into the Warner Hall Lewis line on many occasions.  With the information available, it is impossible to know how and where there is a connection, but autosomal DNA does prove that the line of Planter John Lewis does have common ancestors with both the lines of Zachary Lewis the Immigrant and Warner Hall Lewis.

As of March 2019 - Per Autosomal DNA 6 to 9 Generations back for possible DNA match to Zachary Lewis & Lewis of Warner Hall:
