----------

CLAUDIUS RICHBOURG was the son of Anne Chastain and Rev. Claude Philippe de Richebourg who came from England (originally from France) about 1700. In the 1850's CLAUDIUS fought the Cherokees in the Indian wars. His sons fought in the Revolutionary War. John was a Captain and son Henry fought for both sides. For this he was exiled to England, but was pardoned and allowed to return.

Son James was Justice of Peace - Camden Dist. 1791 & son William was Commissioned as sheriff of Clarendon Co. 1 Oct 1789. He was also Justice of the Quorum & he left a large estate.

CLAUDIUS served in Indian War of 1759-60, under the Command of Col. Richard Richardson, and it is believed for this service, received in 1765 one of the earliest land grants in Sumter Dist, on headwaters of Jack's Creek, a branch of the Santee River.

CLAUDIUS RICHBOURG per J. Grunewald

Hon. Sam J. Ervin, Jr.: (1)

CLAUDIUS RICHBOURG, the youngest son of Claude Philippe de Richbourg, and his wife, Anne Chastain, was about three years of age at the time of his father's death.

After attaining maturity, he acquired substantial holdings in land on Jack's Creek and the Santee River in that portion of Craven County which subsequently became Clarendon County. Here he pursued the calling of a planter, and spent the remainder of his days. The tax lists of Clarendon County reveal that at the time of his death he owned 1050 acres of land and 12 slaves.

CLAUDIUS RICHBOURG of Clarendon made his Will 2-16-1778, prb. 9-6-1788; to Son Henry Richbourg 1 negro; to son James Richbourg 1 negro; to son John Richbourg 1 negro; to son Nathaniel Richbourg 1 negro; to son William Richbourg 1 negro; to daughter Unity Gayle 1 negro; to daughter Susannah Richbourg 1 negro; to wife Unity...after wife's death divided between all children; Execs. : 3 sons Henry, James, John Richbourg; Witn.: R. G. Dennis, Jos. Joyner, Thos. Avery. (2)

3-27-1790, Henry, James & John Richbourg, Execs. of dec'd CLAUDIUS RICHBOURG sold to Thos. Cassity 200 a. on Jacks Cr., bd: S&E - John Richbourg, N-Richard Singleton, being part of 2 tracts:1) granted 10-12-1771 to John Sullivan, 2) granted CLAUDIUS RICHBOURG 1-9-1765; Plat: CLAUDIUS had laid off these 200 acres to his son William Richbourg, Wntn.: George Brunson, Henry White. (3) CLAUDIUS RICHBOURG bought 8-20/21-1774 from John Sullivan 500 a. (on Jacks Cr.) in Craven Co., granted John Sulivan 10/12/1771, bound: W - Jas Evans and CLAUDIUS RICHBOURG, N - James Richbourg, all other sides vacant; Witn.: Joseph Fox, William Thomson (4): on 11-8-1799, Henry and James Richbourg sold 300 of these acres to John Richbourg (5). 9-3-1828 David Hopper dec'd sold to Wm. A. Colclough 268 acres in Clarendon on Horsepond Savannah - the most northwest half of original grant to CLAUDIUS RICHBOURG for 300 acres on 8-7-1753 (6). The only grant found for CLAUDIUS RICHBOURG: 10-17-1753 survey for CLAUDIUS RICHBOURG for 300 a. north of Santee, bound by all vacant land (7): granted 1-9-1755 (8). His land on Horsepond Savannah bounded by Richard Mims 2-4-1756 (9). 3-6-1762 John Evans land on Jacks Cr. bounded by "path to Richbourg's water mill." (10) 1788 Tax List for Clarendon: James Richbourg for the Estate of CLAUDIUS RICHBOURG - 11 slaves and 300 acres. (11) From the index to early deeds registered in Charleston there are 2 from CLAUDIUS RICHBOURG to Moses Thompson: Book N-4, p. 439 1774-75 and Book P-4, p. 533 1775-77. (12)

CLAUDIUS RICHBOURG was married at least twice; to UNITY from his Will and Elizabeth from a conveyance. CLAUDIUS RICHBOURG and wife Elizabeth conveyed a tract of land to George Haid 9-7-1745. (13) From the Rev. War Pensions application of son John Richbourg: "...he entered the service as a volunteer in a company commanded by Capt. Richard Richardson his Subalterns were Henry Richbourg, James Richbourg and Nathaniel Richbourg (who were the brothers of this deponent)...at Quinby Bridge...in this...Lieutenant Fox (an uncle of this deponent) was wounded... (14)

"There is an advertisement in the Gazette of March 17, 1764 offering a tract of 200 acres of land in St. James, Santee, for sale. This advertisement was placed by CLAUDIUS RICHEBOURG, and recites that it was originally a tract of land granted to John Barnett in 1705, who conveyed it to my mother, Anne de Richbourg and directs that anyone interested treat with Mr. Peter Porcher in Charles Towne, where the deeds may be seen, or with the subscriber in St. Mark's Parish, about 25 miles from Nelson's Ferry. It is signed by Claudius Richebourg.

Comments: If Miss Revill was correct in copying the Memorial - CLAUDIUS RICHBOURG was married to an Elizabeth in 1745, making her the probable mother of some of the sons at least. John Richbourg's Rev. War pension establishes his birthyear as 1747 - he is listed 3rd in CLAUDIUS's Will. If CLAUDIUS named the sons in order of birth - there is hardly time for the 2 - Henry and James - to be sons of UNITY - providing of course that UNITY was mother of John.

Soon after the Rev. War began, James Richbourg was in the volunteer company of Capt. Richard Richardson, according to his brother John Richbourg's sworn statement for a pension for Rev. War service. DAR PATRIOT INDEX: James Richbourg born 1735, die 1804, married Mrs. Levisea Maples, performed Patriotic Service in South Carolina.

James Richbourg was married at least twice as will be shown in the following deeds. James Richbourg of St. marks parish and wife Recebba sold on 4-12-1787 to Richard Singleton 700 acres in 3 tracts on Jacks Cr., Santee River; Witn.: P. Dardelia, Hughes Fournieu. These 700 acres on Jacks Cr. are as follows from a Plat made 11-24-1814: 287 1/2 acres survey for 200 a. for him 3-2-1772: 106 3/4 acres surv'd for 100 a. for him 5-21-1764; 486 acres surv'd for 400 a. for him 1-15-1772.

Of Clarendon, Jas. Richbourg bought 2-11-1795 from John Nelson 100 a. on Taw-Caw Sw. On 2-11-1795, he bought 100 a. on Taw Caw Sw. from James Nelson. On 2-19-1795 he bought from Susanna Richbourg the 3rd 100 a. same location. On 2-20-1795, James Richbourg Sr. and wife Lovici (X) sold the same 300 acres on Taw Caw to Robert Dingle: Witn.: Wm. and Solomon Buddin.

James Richbourg Sr. made his will 8-28-1803, probated 1-7-1804: wife Lavisia, dau. Isabella L. Nelson, dau. Susanna Terry, dau Elizabeth Richbourg, dau. Mary Gayle, sons Joseph and Daniel Dela Richbourg, dau. in law Dorothy Maples, granddau. Margaret Bosher, under age: Exec.: Mathew James, Henry Richbourg: Witn: Chas. Brunson Sr. & Narcissus Graham.

1810 Sumter Census, Clarendon - Louisa Richbourg: 2 m 10-15, 1 f 45 or +, 8 slaves. 2-13-1811, Louisa Richbourg's land bound on Jacks Creek. Louisa Richbourg had died before 1-10-1817 when Joseph Richbourg was appointed Adm. of her estate. The DAR records previously mentioned stated that James Richbourg married Mrs. Levisea Maples. James Richbourg's Will mentioned a dau. in law Dorothy Maples; certainly at that time, the expression "dau. in law" was often used to denote a "dau. by law" or stepdaughter. However, the marital status of Louisa (or Levisea or Lovici or Lavisia, as she appears on various records) cannot be proved by this compiler. She may have been the widow of a Maples with a daughter Dorothy, although the late Wilhelm Von Hacks found no records in Sumter District to establish this. The 10-24-1793 Will of Mary Maples, widow of Thos. Maples Sr., named among her grandchildren one Dorothy Maples, and as a living daughter one Lovey Maples. If this Lovey Maples was the dau. of Mary Maples and not the widow of a son, and if Lovey was she who appears as Louisa, Levisea, Lovici, etc. - then she may have been unmarried with a child when she married James Richbourg.

HUGUENOT SOCIETY OF SOUTH CAROLINA

P. 38-9 CLAUDIUS RICHBOURG'S Wife

Chovine Richardson Clark of Manning, South Carolina, a Committee member of the Huguenot Society of South Carolina, has deposited in the Library a Richbourg document which will be of great genealogical value to Richbourg records in that it seems to provide conclusive evidence as to the identity of the wife of CLAUDIUS RICHBOURG. Mr. Clarks's letter below accompanying the document points out further details of genealogical interest:

"I secured from the National Archives at Washington the attached four-page sworn statement of John Richbourg, Sr., made in 1833 in connection with his application for a federal pension based on his service in the Revolutionary War, under the pension law passed in 1821, when John was 85 years old. You will note on line S, page 1, that John Richbourg, Sr., lists Henry, James and Nathaniel Richbourg as being in the same outfit with him and stating that they were his brothers (a fighting family, I would say, to come down from a notable man of religion). John gives his own birth date as August 23, 1747, near the bottom of page 3.

Then, on line 19 from the bottom of page 2, John names one of the officers of his company as Lieut. Fox, whom he said was his uncle. I have seen some references indicating that John's father (CLAUDIUS) married Unity Ridgill, but your records show it was UNITY FOX, which I believe is correct. If Lieut. Fox was John Richbourg's uncle I should think his mother had to be a Fox (no pun)...

        P. 68 CLAUDIUS RICHEBOURG, who is the subject of a separate sketch, pursued he calling of a planter in the part of Craven County, S. C. which subsequently became Clarendon County.

        P. 70-4 CLAUDIUS RICHBOURGH:

CLAUDIUS RICHBOURGH, the youngest son of Claude Philippe de Richebourg, and his wife, Anne Chastain, was about three years of age at the time of his father's death.

After attaining maturity, he acquired substantial holdings in land on Jack's Creek and the Santee River in that portion of Craven County which subsequently became Clarendon County. Here he pursued the calling of a planter, and spent the remainder of his days. The tax lists of Clarendon County revealed that at the time of his death he owned 1050 acres of land and 12 slaves.

The will of CLAUDIUS RICHBOURG gives the Christian name of his wife as UNITY, and discloses that he had five sons and two daughters. They were:

i. Henry Richbourg, who supported the colonies in their fight for independence during the Revolution by supplying provisions for Continental soldiers and the state militia. (1) Henry Richbourg was listed in the census of l1800 for Clarendon County as "Henry Richbourgh, Senr.," and as the head of a family consisting of one free white male of 45 years and upwards, three free white males between 16 and 26 years, three free white males between 10 and 16 years, one free white male under 10 years, one free white female of 45 years and upwards, one free white female under 10 years, and fifteen slaves. (2)

ii. James Richbourg, who is the subject of a separate sketch.

iii. John Richbourg, who was born August 23, 1747, and died November 29, 1838. (3) He served as a Captain in Colonel Sumter's Regiment, South Carolina line: during the Revolution. (4) He also aided in winning American Independence by furnishing supplies to the South Carolina Militia. (5) In 1773, Captain John Richbourg married Mary Long who was born in 1755 and died in 1775, survived by a son Nathaniel Richbourg, who married Susan Holliday. After Mary Long's death, Captain Richbourg contracted a second marriage with Sarah Abbott. Captain Richbourg was listed in the census of 1800 for Clarendon County as "John Richbourg, Sen." and as the head of a family consisting of one free white male of 45 years and upward, two free white males between 16 and 26 years, one free white male between 10 and 16 years, one free white male under 10 years, one free white female of 45 years and upward, one free white female between 16 and 26 years, and seven slaves.
