Greenberry Chaney & Caroline Hainsworth
|
GREEN BERRY CHANEY, was born in 1794 in Georgia. Most likely he was the son of Emanuel & Sarah ?Cato Chaney & was named for Emanuel’s father. GREEN BERRY had a brother Peyton Cheney who died and left all his land to the sons of GREEN BERRY - apparently Peyton never married. GREEN BERRY CHANEY married CAROLINE HAINSWORTH. After the death of GREEN BERRY CHANEY, CAROLINE married a Judge W. J. Auston (Alston) of Tuscaloosa. Being very bitter after the Civil War, CAROLINE left to live in Brazil so she could keep her slaves; however, she died in Mexico on the way to Brazil and is buried there. Mrs. T. Wimberley has a tin type picture of CAROLINE. According to Mrs. Jones, GREEN BERRY CHANEY, was a man of some means when he married CAROLINE. The Chaneys had extensive land holdings in both Choctaw and Sumter Counties, Alabama, as well as owning many slaves. ----------- Records of Choctaw Trading Post, St. Stephens, Mississippi Territory 1803-1815 976.1243S p. 3 4-16-1803 Receipt from John McCole to Capt.
