Henry Goucher and Rachel ?Larkin

The following information is from the Gotcher web site.

It is estimated HENRY GOTCHER was born before 1750  based on the 1790 South Carolina Census.  If he is the HENRY GOTCHER who arrived on the William & Sarah in 1727, he would have been born before 1725.  His mother had a sister who was a babe-in-arms on the trip.

HENRY GOTCHER was living in Fincastle Co., Virginia between 1768 and 1782. [Carroll 1765-1815: The Settlements].  He had 300 acres on Lower Crooked Creek.  It appears that HENRY and RACHEL (born about 1750) were married in Fincastle Co., Va  before 1770 [Broyes Home Page] where Henry came to live in 1768.  She is referenced as the wife of HENRY during the sale of property on the Holston River in 1789.  The oldest child of HENRY was born about 1770.  HENRY was listed on the Tax Roll of 1771 in Fincastle Co., Va. in the list of Tithables in William Herbert’s Company. [Early Adventures on the Western Waters]

HENRY GOTCHER is listed in the Certified list of Georgia troups 1779 compiled by Capt. B. F. Johnson.  He received a soldiers’ grant of land for serving in the American Revolution.  HENRY probably was in the militia in the back country of North Carolina which later became Tennessee. [Georgia’s roster of the Revolution: Containing a list of the state’s defenders officers and men: soldiers and sailors: partisans and regulars, whether enlisted from Georgia or settled in Georgia after the close of hostilities.  Citations: HENRY GOACHR SR  (Military Veteran) p. 400][Stub entries to indents issued in payment of claims against South Carolina growing out of the Revolution.  Books Y-Z.  Stub indents wee similar to bearer bonds.  The service may possibly have occurred in a different area, but the indent was presented where bounty lands were available.]

HENRY GOTCHER was living between 1784 & 1797, Pendleton Co Ninety Six District, South Carolina.  He purchased and sold land in the area between 1788 and 1797.  [Pendleton District and Anderson County, S.C. Wills, Estates, Inventories, Tax Returns and Census Records][Pendleton District, S.C. Deds 1790-1806 p. 31 In April 1792, HENRY GOCHR owned property which bounded a piece of property sold on the east side of the Broadmouth Creek, waters of the Saluda Rivr in Washington Creek.  One of the other witnesses was Matthew Alexander.  Was he related to David Alexander who was Ann Gotcher’s father?  page 41 In July 1791 & Oct. 1792 HENRY GOCHER owned property which bounded pieces of property sold on the east side of the Broadmouth Creek, waters of the Saluda River in Washington Creek.   Other pages with references to HENRY GOACHER are  28 (land grant), 31, 32, 41, & 154.][Heads of families at the first census of the United States taken in the year 1790 South Carolina, Ninety-Six District, Pendleton, County.  The family name was spelled GOCHER.  HENRY SR., Henry Jr., Thomas, William, and John were listed on page 82].

HENRY GOCHER was listed on the 1787 tax list for Abbeville Co, SC in the pre 1790 Colonial American Census Index.  No township was listed.  22 Jan 1788, Abbeville Co., South Carolina HENRY made his mark (H) rather than signing his name on the deed executed.   During his life HENRY received 640 acres in District 96, 198 acres in Washington Co., TN (Grant #57), and 200 acres on the south side of the Holston River.   November 8, 1794 he was a purchaser of property at an estate sale.

The number of children listed on the 1790 census as part of HENRY’s family indicates that in 1790 HENRY was at least 40 years of age.

Free white males over 16 = 2 (HENRY and 1 son)

Free white males under 16 = 3 (3 sons)

Free white females = 3 (RACHEL and 2 daughters)

Between the years 1804 and 1812 he was living in Franklin Co., Georgia . [History of Franklin county Georgia page 94]  The History of Franklin County source lists the 1805 land lottery in Georgia.  Joshua and HENRY SR. were allowed two draws but did not draw winners.  They were at least 21 years of age, had a wife and/or children, and had resided in Georgia for at least one year.

HENRY was living in Franklin Co., Alabama between 1820 and 1823.  [Franklin Co, Alabama Tax Lists][United States Census Franklin Co, Alabama 1820] .
