James 114. ---------- From the Langston family File in Dallas Library is this newspaper clipping: LANGSTON Received Land Grant JOHN LANGSTON came to Granville County, N. C., about 1768. His ancestors may have lived in England and they may have gone later to Ireland and then to Virginia. They may have been among the Whigs who opposed the English government in an unsuccessful rebellion, and were run out. He came to Greenville County because his son, Solomon lived near the Enoree River, above Travelers Rest. JOHN LANGSTON received a grant of 639 acres of land generally north of the present Earle Street in 1874. Langston's Branch runs through Sans Souci Heights today, and Langston Street is named for him. LANGSTON Williams This Indenture made the third day of June one to thousand seven hundred fifty & six between JOHN LANGSTON of Granville County in the province of Deed North Carolina of the one part & John Williams of Examd the aforsd county of the other part witnesseth that as the said JOHN LANGSTON for and in consideration of the sum of five shillings Sterling money of England to him in hand paid by the said John Williams before the Signing and sealing of these presents all ready paid the receipt whereof he doth hereby confess and acknowledge himself there with fully satisfied contented and paid and of every part and parcial there of to the said John Williams his heirs Ececde and Asigns and every of them doth hereby fully clearly and absolutly acquit and discharge hath Bargained sold and confirmed who the said John Williams his heirs and assigns and one certain tract or parcel of Land containing by estimation one hundred and five acres to the same more or less situate lying and being in Granville County on both sides of Tar River and bounded as followeth to wit. Beginning at a Hickory on the N. Side of Tar River on Wm Williams's line then co N. to a king oak and Black oak then co W. to a Black Oak then co So to a Hickory then co Ea to the first station mentioned to have hold and peacably to injoy the sd one hundred and five acres of land to the same more or less with all the houses orchards gardens woodsway underwoods and meadow grounds and all othere and singular the Improvements thereoute belonging or in any wise appurtaining to the said land and premisses and as the said JOHN LANGSTON do further saith that he will warrant and defend the right and title of the said land and promises to be good to the said John Williams his heirs and Assigns and for ever by virtue of a deed granted to him by Earl Granville's Agent bearing oats in May 1755 whereof the above said one lived 250 and five acres are part of the said land granted to him by said deed and the said JOHN LANGSTON do promise for himself his heirs Exeed Admx and Assigns and to make any further right title or conveyance to the said John Williams for the said one hundred and five acres of land as he the said John Williams his heirs and Assigns or his or their Council learned in the Law shall lawfully requires. Carolina 1778 South Carolina Ninety Six District Wilfull wrong doer was attached to John Infinger a plea therefore with free & arms & so forth he entered into a certain plantation or tract of land containing Six hundred acres situate lying and being as was formerly supposed in the county of Anson in the province now state of North Carolina but found when running the division line between the two states of North & South Carolina to be in Ninety Six District in the State of South Carolina Beginning at a cedar tree on the North branch of Enree River at the upper end of Fort Shoal about four or five miles below Bartlett Brown's land originally located in the State of North Carolina aforesaid to and thence examined & having such shape and form and marks as appears by a Platt thereof & the original grant thereof annexed; which the said Bartlet Brown demised to the said John Infinger for a Farm which is not yet up paid by him the said John Infinger from the same did just and other wrongs to him did to the just damage of the said John Infinger & against the peace of the State aforesaid & so forth And thereupon the said John Infinger by John Colcock his attorney complains that the said Bartlett Brown on the first day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy Eight at Ninety six in the District of ninety six and within the Jurisdicaiton of this court administers to the aforesaid John Infinger the said Plantation or tract of land with the appertenances To have and to hold the same to the said John Infinger & his assign from the said first day of January in the year aforesaid unto the end and term of Five years next ensueing and faulty to be conflict and ended yielding of paying therefore unto the said Bartlett Brown the sum of Ten shillings lawful money of the said note yearly and every year during the said term by writ of which demise the said John Infinger intend into the said tract of land with the appertenances and was possessed thereof and the said John Infinger being so possessed thereof the said wilfull wrongdoer afterwards towit on the second day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy Eight aforesaid with force and arms into the said tract of land with the appurtenances as aforesaid intered and the said John Infinger from the same ejected and other wrongs and ?to him ? by his ? great damage and against the peace of the State of South Carolina aforesaid wherefore the said John Infinger said that he is ? and damage hath sustained to Five Thousand pounds lawfull money of the said State therefore he brings this suit and so forth Col Co Ck P.? Whereas administration of all and singular the Good Rights and credits, which were John Langston deceased were lately committed by the said John Thomas unto the said William and Lydia Bennett. The condition of the above obligation is such that if the said William Bennett do and shall will and faithfully administer the goods rights and credits to the said deceased and which shall come into the hands or knowledge of them the said William Bennett and Lydia his wife to be administered and shall make distribution of what remains after having the debts and funeral Expenses of the said deceased in due course of law. In the name of God Amen I JOHN LANGSTON of South Carolina and worthy member of the Church being through the abundant mercy and goodness of God tho weak in body yeat of a sound and perfect understanding and memory do constitute this my last will and testament and desirest may be received by all as such imprimes. I most humbly bequeath my soul to God my maker beseeching his most gracious acceptance of it through the all sufficient merits and mediation of my most compassionate redeemer Jesus Christ who gave himself to be an attonement for my sins and is able to save to the uttermost all that come unto God by him seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them and who I trust will not reject me a returning penitent sinner when I come to him for mercy in this hope and confindence I tender up my soul with comfort humbly beseeching the most blessed and glorious Trinity One God most Holy most merciful and Glorious to prepare me for the time of my disolution and them to take me to himself in that peace and rest and incomparable felinity which he has prepared for all that love and hear his Holy name Amen. Item I give to my son James one negro named Harry to him and his heirs, Item I give to my son Solomon one negro named Lamkin to him and his heirs, Item I give to my grandson Asa at marriage if he lives until the, if not to his brother Willm but my wife to have the use of him her life and after her decease Jechonias until such marriage as afores'd one negor named Benn, I also give Jechonias that piece of land he lives on to him and his heirs, Item I give to my daughter Molley Smith one negro named Venus, but if Feb brings one more for that to go to Molley and Venus to fall to her mistress, Item I give to my daughter Beekka Wilms one negro girl named Ede to her and her heirs after my wife's decease Item I give to my daughter Fanney my negro boy named Tim, Item I give to my daughter Salley Smith one negro boy named Peter, Item to my son Samuel one negro man named Hippoh after my wife's deceased, Item I give to my daughter Elizabeth Spann one cow and calf, Item I give to my sons Joseph, Jesse ten shillings sterling each also my daughter Patta McVay the same, Item I leave the remainder of my whole estate land and mill and all my household goods and the use of all the negroes but Lamkin and Harry during her life and after her decease to be sold at Vendee, the land and mill and all the estate Indow and all be divided amongst my children named as followeth and first Samuel Langston, Molley Smith, Sally Smith & Fanny Langston, Jechonias Langston and John son of Jesse my grandson equal to be divided among them all and Bekka Willms.
