However, the county land tax records reveal that JOHN NUNNALLY died in 1805. That year’s tax list states ‘JOHN NUNNALLY Dec’d Estate,’ and adds a new name to the list ‘ELLINOR NUNNALLY,’ with ‘one-third of the land on which John lived.’. This is the portion traditionally allowed as ‘dower land,’ reserved for a man’s wife; was ELLINOR JOHN’s widow? She continues on the tax list until 1812 with this same acreage; did she die then?" |
