Eaton Bailey Their native states were
Connecticut and New York. Their
destination appears to have been Essex or Warren County, New York near
Chesterville. This is where JOSHUA
EATON’s daughter, Polly, was born in 1805. Joshua and Lucy (Gould – his
first wife) had three daughters and two sons.
In the 1830 Census barre, Orleans County, New York the John W. Bailey
family was living two houses away from JOSHUA EATON’s family. Page 7.
JOSHUA W. EATON was born in 1775 in Connecticut.
From the history of Warren County, New York, obtained at the museum in
Lake George is an account of JOSHUA and his brother, Rice Eaton.
In 1805, there were only two buildings which were log houses, where the
village of Chestertown now stands. One
of the log houses was on the site of rising’s Hotel, which was the dwelling of
JOSHUA EATON and the other just east of the site of Down’s Hotel, which was
occupied by Rice Eaton.
On March 6, 1841 in Michigan JOSHUA was married to Polly Burrell Bailey.
JOSHUA’s son, Alexander, accompanies him to Michigan.
This young man was 23 years old and had completed the requirements to
practice as a doctor. He was
considering opening an office in Hudson when he was stricken with a disease that
claimed his life.
Both JOSHUA and POLLY, who had come to Michigan with her son, John and
his wife, lived with John and his family. JOSHUA
was a Baptist minister and no doubt assisted in the establishment of the Baptist
Church at Churches Corner. No record
can be found of his having served any of the several Baptist churches in the
area. **Note
from Dianne - not sure this is all 100% correct. Joshua had more than 2
sons. ---------- History of Warren County

In 1805 there were only two buildings – log houses – where now is the
village of Chestertown; one on the site of Rising’s Hotel, the dwelling place
of JOSHUA EATON, and the other just east of the site of Down’s Hotel, occupied
by Rice Eaton. The only clearings
here were around these houses. But
within a year or two immigration directed its current to the spot, and before
1820 the wilderness had been broken and a thriving settlement had taken up its
abode here. ----- History of Macomb County
Michigan – Chapter XXXV, Richmond Township The first death was that of
Bird, the first school-teacher, who was born in a lot a little south of
Congregational Church, which Wells had designed for a cemetery.
The wife of JOSHUA EATON was the next to be buried here.
Her body was afterward removed, but that of Bird still lies where it was
placed. ------- History of Hillsdale County, Michigan Page 93. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holland_Land_Company · The Holland Land Company was an unincorporated syndicate of thirteen Dutch investors[1] from Amsterdam[1] who in 1792 and 1793 purchased the western two-thirds of the Phelps and Gorham Purchase, an area that afterward was known as the Holland Purchase. Aliens were forbidden from owning land within the United States, so the investors placed their funds in the hands of certain trustees who bought the land in central and western New York State, and western Pennsylvania. The syndicate hoped to sell the land rapidly at a great profit. Instead, for many years they were forced to make further investments in their purchase; surveying it, building roads, digging canals, to make it more attractive to settlers. They sold the last of their land interests in 1840, when the syndicate was dissolved. ------------ Michigan Land Dealings for Joshua Eaton
