Deed book R. pp72-3 1800 (23rd year of Independence) CALEB CONAWAY & wife MARY CONAWAY sold 100 acres in Pendleton County to Richard Smith. The deed was not recorded until 1825. ----- http://robertkayfamily.org/geneal.htm 3rd paragraph down In 1794, Robert Kay, Sr., acquired a tract on Broadmouth Creek, in what is now Anderson County, South Carolina. He paid one hundred pounds sterling to CALEB CONAWAY for the six hundred thirty acre tract, which was described as being 200 acres from a 1784 grant to John Hallum and 430 acres from a 640 acre grant to Francis Bremar and James Martin. This tract became the Robert Kay homestead, east of Broadmouth Creek and on both sides of a road now designated as US-76. -------- 1800 Census of Pendleton District, South Carolina by Stewart 975.72 p.29 Halum of a family which appeared in Rowan County, N.C., in the early 1760s and later lived there and in nearby counties, John Hallum was granted 630 acres on Broad Mouth of Saluda River in Pendleton District 15 Oct. 1784…John’s 1784 Broad Mouth grant was sold to CALEB CONWAY who with wife MARY sold it 22 Jan 1794 to Robert Kay Sr…. -------- Note by Dianne: It appears that John Hallum sold at least part of the 630 acres granted to him, to Henry Gotcher who in turn sold 200 acres of that same land to CALEB CONAWAY. In 1794 CALEB sold a total of 840 acres. Part was the 200 acres from the John Hallum grant and the rest (640 acres) was apparently bought from Francis Bremar & James Martin from a grant they received 1786. I have not found that deed of conveyance. -------- Pendleton District & Anderson County SC Wills, Estates, Inventories, Tax Records & Census Records by Anderson 975.72A p.5 Inventory & Appraisement of Giles Gant - p 19 8 Nov 1793, inventory and appraisement of property of Giles Gant, dec’d, by Joseph Brown, Jr., Wm.
