Wit: George Goggans, DANIEL GOGGANS. p. 8 This document is significant because...1. It is the first Virginia document with the current spelling of GOGGANS instead of Gogin or Goggins. 2. It proves that both DANIEL and George did live in Culpeper County prior to their move to South Carolina in 1766. ---------- In a letter from Melba Neighbors Hagan dated January 14, 1994 DANIEL was the oldest of four sons of William, born ca 1700 in County Cork, Ireland, died ca 1766 in Culpepper County, Virginia, and Elizabeth Beal, born 1715, died ca 1766 in Culpepper County. they were married 1729 in Lunenburg parish, Virginia. the sons were Daniel, George, William and James, all born in Virginia. No record of other children was found. ------ ANNALS OF NEWBERRY by John B. O'Neall & John A. Chapman Page 614 "The Goggans Family" About twenty-five years before the Revolutionary War two brothers named Goggans came to Newberry from Virginia. One of these, DANIEL GOGGANS settled on a place which is now known as Goggans' Old Field, not far from Mount Zion Church. These brothers, with their families, were Whigs, and fought for independence under Marion, Sumter, Pickens, and others. DANIEL GOGGANS was in Marion's Command, and once when he was at home on furlough his house was surrounded by a body of Tories commanded by the celebrated and notorious Ned Turner. He knew that his life would be taken in any case, unless he could make his escape, which was impossible; and so he fought them from the house until it was set on fire. After he came out with his arms in his hands, and was instantly shot down. After he was killed the flames were extinguished, and the house stood there for many years, with its scorched and blackened timbers, a monument of the horrors of that war. All of the sons of DANIEL GOGGANS, who were old enough to bear arms in defense of their country, perished in that struggle. His son-in-law, Towles, ancestor of the Col. Towles who was so long and so favorable known to the people of Edgefield County, was home from the army to see his family - was sick with smallpox - was hiding in the woods on Saluda, when Ned Turner with a party of Tories went to his house, took two of Towles little boys up behind them on their horses and compelled them to go with them and show them where their father was hiding. Having found him they killed him at once. It seems that the feud between the Towles and the Turners was exceedingly and unusually bitter. In an appendix to Curwin's Journal, published not long before the war of Succession, there are some interesting circumstances related about the feud told from the other point of view. DANIEL GOGGANS, of the Revolution, who was killed by Turner was related, left three sons, who were children at the time of his death. They grew up to manhood. One of them, Jerry Goggans, married Elizabeth Peterson. DANIEL GOGGANS had two other sons. They both removed to Alabama. One of them married a Peterson, a sister to the wife of his brother Jerry. These brothers did well in Alabama and left a numerous progeny; among them maybe mentioned Dr. Peterson Goggans, who was surgeon of an Alabama regiment in the Confederate service. Some of the descendants of these two brothers now live in Tennessee. -------- NEWBERRY COUNTY SOUTH CAROLINA HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL by George Leland Summer, Sr. p. 230 "Goggans" The Goggans family came from Virginia about twenty-five years before the beginning of the Revolutionary War. DANIEL GOGGANS and one or two brothers all Revolutionary War patriots and soldiers in South Carolina Militia, were sons of the pioneers from Virginia who settled in the northern section of Ninety-Six District. DANIEL was killed by the Tories during the latter years of the war and his older sons, who were old enough to fight, were also killed. DANIEL GOGGANS' father settled on the Northern Section of 96 District of Virginia. page 12 "Revolutionary War Battle Sites in Newberry County or in Adjoining Counties" Hays' Station This battle occurred in 1781 just across the Newberry County line (where is now the line), and at a place that is now in Laurens County. The place was formerly called Edge Hill. Some of the Tories attached Col. Hays who had barricaded his troops in a small house. The fire that burned the house, set by the Tories, almost burned the soldiers who came out and offered to surrender. The Tory Colonel, "Bloody" Bill Cunningham, received them but later hung them and mutilated their bodies. (Comment by Ruth Conaway Kendrick: One distant relative believes that DANIEL GOGGANS may have been killed here.) (Comment by Dianne Conaway Blankenstein: Annals of Newberry indicates he might have been.) ---------- / South Carolina / By virtue of a present to me / directed by Jno. _______(name) / the Departure & Grant Bearing / Date 5th August 1766, I have / administered and laid out unto MAP / DANIEL GOGGINGS a Plantation or / tract of land containing two / hundred & Fifty acres situate / lying and being in Berkley / County on a branch of Sandy Run / bounded on all sides by vacant / land and hath such shape form & / marked as the above plat / represents. / Certified for the 11th day of / August 1766.
