Thomas Spratlin Porter remembers the following about his ancestors -- as they were told him by his Grandmother, Mary Jane Ogletree Thomas and her sister, Sarah Elizabeth Ogletree Pinson. This history was related to Ruth Conaway Kendrick in April 1966. The red or brown hair that showed up in the later generations was inherited from the Works side of the family. Sally Goggans Hughes Porter remembers that the Works family came to America from So. Wales, England. Ruth Conaway Kendrick says in a letter that one lady she was corresponding with in South Carolina (a Peterson descendant) told her of having a rocking chair brought by wagon from Pennsylvania to South Carolina when her family moved. The Works family apparently came from Pennsylvania through Virginia to South Carolina. A James Works was listed in a Revolutionary War size roll about 1780. He was cited as being of York County, Pennsylvania, and would have been born about 1756. ---------- FOURTH SERIES VOL I, HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL NOTES AND QUERIES (Relating to Pennsylvania) p. 136 states that Patrick Work bought land in Pennsylvania in 1760 & with a brother moved to Virginia and they were officers in the Revolutionary army from that State. A daughter of John Galbraith married a Work, probably James Work, son of the above Patrick Work. No connection to these Works have been established.
