Information sent by Lee Balis - Sources of Information: Original records, wills, and deeds in various counties: Chapter I RICHARD and ANNE BENNETT were probably originally from Virginia, as family descendants did not seem to realize that they had lived many years in North Carolina and have repeatedly said the family was from Virginia. Their friends and neighbors were from Surry Co. and other southern Virginia counties, but at this writing it has not been determined exactly where, nor whom their parents were. We first find them in 1741 when RICHARD received 200 acres of land in Edgecombe Co., North Carolina on Buffalo Creek from King George II. They made their home here. In 1746, Edgecombe Co. was divided and the part in which they lived became Granville Co.; in 1764 Granville Co. was divided and they lived in the section that became Bute Co. In 1779 Bute Co. was abolished and their plantation on Buffalo Creek was in Warren Co. Thus, their home was always in the same place, but records of them are found in all four counties. We also find records for them in Halifax Co. [once part of Edgecombe Co.], where RICHARD had some Land. RICHARD was probably born in 1700-1710 and died in Bute Co. August 1764. ANNE died in Warren County about 1779-1780. They had ten children, five boys and five girls, as follows: Christian - Born about 1731 probably in Virginia and died in Union County, South Carolina about 1803. She married Absalom Langston and moved to Spartanburg Co., South Carolina in 1771. A second marriage to Alexander Fairbourne resulted in a move to Union County, South Carolina where she died. She had a son, Nathan Langston, who was a well-known and beloved Baptist minister in Spartenburg Co., South Carolina. Sarah - Born about 1733 probably in Virginia and died after 1810 in Laurens County, South Carolina. She married Solomon Langston and moved to Laurens Co. about 1777. They had a daughter, Dicey, who was a Revolutionary War heroine. Richard Jr. - He was probably born in Virginia about 1734 and died May 1823 in Warren County, North Carolina. He married Sylvia Smart and they remained on the home place in Warren Co., North Carolina. Their son, Philemon, and grandson, Mark, were devoted Baptist ministers in Nash Co., North Carolina. Mark - Born about 1738 probably in Virginia and died in Montgomery County, North Carolina after 1810. He and his wife Jemima lived in Warren Co., North Carolina but moved to Montgomery Co., N. C. about 1779. Most of their descendants moved to Wilson and Carroll Co., Tennessee. William - Born about 1741 in Virginia or North Carolina and died about 1826 in Pendleton Co., South Carolina. His first marriage was to possibly Sarah (question as to last name). They lived at Knap of Reed's Creek, Granville Co., North Carolina. They had a son, Cooper, who became a well-known Baptist minister. William moved to Anderson-Pendleton Co., South Carolina before 1790 where he married Abigail Gee. Moses - He was born in Edgecombe Co., North Carolina about 1743. There is no further record. Martha - Born about 1746 in Granville Co., North Carolina. She probably did not marry as she sold land inherited from her father in 1780 as Martha Bennett. [She possibly had a son Thomas out of marriage.] James - [Solomon Langston was made a Guardian for James Bennett. James moved to S. C. with the Langstons. His will is in Spartanburg 11 Dec 1816. Proved 24 Oct 1825. Sons: Rowland and Mark, daus: Elizabeth Edwards, Jean Bennett, and Salley Bennett.] Anne - Born about 1751 and probably died before 1780 as Richard Jr. bought land from Amey and Martha, but not Anne, that they inherited from their Father, as proven from a deed of Richard Jr's., nor was Ann included in the gift of slaves from her mother. Amey - Born about 1753 in North Carolina. She married John Capps and remained in Warren Co., North Carolina. John Capps died March - May 1804. We bind ourselves and each of us our and Each of our heirs Exor and Admrs Firmly and Severally firmly by these presents Sealed and dated the 15th day of February anno Domo 1769. The condition of this obligation is such that and whereas the above named Solomon Langston at a court held for the aforesaid county of Bute on the day of the date hereof nominated constituted and appointed the above bound Solomon Langston to be guardian of James Bennett orphan of RICHARD BENNETT decd and therein did give and grant unto the said Solomon Langston full power and authority to take unto his custody and possession all the Estate of the said orphan within the County aforesaid. Now if therefore the said Solomon Langston his heirs Exor or Admr shall and do render a first true and perfect accot of all the Estate goods chattels rights and credits of and belonging to the said orphan and shall come to his hands knowledge or possession or into the hands or/& possession of any person or persons whomsoever by him the said Solomon's order or procurement and the same on oath to Exhibit to the Justices of the said Court when Sitting within three months from the Date hereof to be entered on the records of the said Court & Delivered to the said James Bennitt when and as soon as he shall attain and arrive to the age of twenty one years in kind, Quality, Quantity, pursuance to the Laws of this province in that case on ade and provided & shall also sane harmless and Idemnity the said Justices above mentioned of From and Concerning the Estate of the said orphan and also shall at any time when required by the Justices of the said court render a just and perfect account of his guardianship honestly without fraud or covin, then this obilgation to be void, Else to be and remain in force. Oak in Kennons line thence along his line Et. 124 poles to a hickory in Daniels line thence by his line N. 30 poles to a white Oak his corner thence his line Et. to the first Station Containing by Estimation five Hundred and fifty acres be the same more or less together with all woods underwoods profits comodities advantages. Hereditaments & appurtances to the same belonging or in any wise appertaining also the Revision & Revisions remainder and remainders rents and services thereof & every part thereof all the estate right title Interest Claim & Demand whatever of him the sd Thomas Person of in & to the sd Missuage Tenement & premises & every part thereof To have & to hold the sd Dividend or parcel of land with their appertenances unto the sd Richard Bennit his heirs & assignment forever & the sd Thomas Person for himself & his heirs the Tract or parcel of Land and premisses with their appertenances unto the Sd Richard Bennit his heirs and assigns forever against him the sd Thomas Person & his heirs and against all and every of them their heirs and against all and every other person Claiming by through or under them or any of them whatsoever laying any lawfull claim thereto or having any demand whatsoever against the sd land & premises shall & will warrant and forever the sd land by these presents. Satterwhite JP Teste Dusten Search CC ----------- BENNITT to Capps Gift 1779 Warren County, North Carolina North Carolina Know all men by these presents that I ANNE BENNETT of Warren County in the State of North Carolina for divers good causes and considerations me here unto moving but more Especially for the Tender love and affection I have and do bear unto my son in law John Capps and Martha Bennett, Have and do by these presents give unto them three Negro slaves, one named Mary, one named Sam and one named Salle, them and their Increase to the aforesaid John Capps and * Anne Bennett to them and their heirs forever, to be possessed with at the Ensealing and delivery hereof, and likewise for the reasons before mentioned, do likewise give to the aforesaid John Capps and Martha Bennett, and likewise all my house hold goods and Cattle.
