"The ancestor of the Cheney family of Maryland was RICHARD CHEYNEY who settled in the Province sometime before 1650. (?from Mt. Cheney, Cork County, Ireland) Soon after his landing he applied for land warrants and received first "Cheney's Hill", lying on South River. It is evident that he was single when he arrived in the Province, because between the years 1643 and 1682 no female by the name of Cheney was listed among the immigrants. He, however married twice, but the name of his first wife is unknown.
About 1668 RICHARD CHENEY married secondly ELEANOR. The births of the children are found in All Hallow's Parish.
By negotiating other warrants, RICHARD CHENEY soon became one of the largest land owners in the South River Hundred. During 1653, he patented "Cheney's Neck" with 100 acres, "Cheney's Resolution" with 400 acres, "Cheney's Hazard" with 100 acres, the total amounting to 1,110 acres.
After more than thirty years of residence in the Province, RICHARD CHENEY died at his seat on South River in 1685, having made a will some ten years before this date. Prior to his death he bequeathed to his son-in-law, John Jacob, "Cheney's Resolution", lying on the south side of South River for the consideration of natural love of fatherly affection.
In his will Richard, the oldest son, was named as executor and received in fee simple "Cheney's Rest", consisting of 250 acres on South River. Thomas and Charles were to receive the remainder of "Resolution" upon the attainment of their sixteenth birthday. Their brother, Richard, and their sister and brother-in-law, Anne and John Jacob, were named guardians. The daughters Mary, Elizabeth, and Anne, received personalty. His wife was bequeathed merely her dower rights.
Forty-one years after his death a law suit developed over the parental dwelling and plantation. His son-in-law and daughter, John Jacob and his wife Mary, appeared in court as well as his widowed daughter Elizabeth Iiams.
John Jacob stated that on March 6, 1675/6, he happened to be at the home of Colonel William Burgess and a certain William Cocks drew up a will for RICHARD CHENEY. He heard RICHARD CHENEY dictate to William Cocks that the homestead was to be inherited by his two sons, Thomas and Charles. He saw RICHARD CHENEY sign the will and testified that he, with Colonel William Burgess and William Cocks, signed their names as witnesses.
Anne, the wife of John Jacob, asserted that she heard her husband say many times that her father, RICHARD CHENEY, made a will at the home of William Burgess. She was left five shillings but did not remember receiving them. Elizabeth Iiams practically made the same assertion as that of her sister Anne." Early Settlers of Maryland lists RICHARD CHEYNEY immigrated 1658 and CHARITY CHEYNEY, wife of Richrd immigrated 1650 (q.74). [1650 may be correct date for both immigrations (HWN)]. John Cheney transported 1658-63 (6.63); Nicholas Cheyney transported 1668 (11.348); RICHARD CHENY transported 1674 (18.176).
Matthew Chanee transported 1675 (15.322). The name is found as Cheeney, Cheny, Cheney, Cheyney and possibly also Chaney and variations.

An ELEANOR Pindle was bur. 9 Mar 1709 according to All Hallow’s Parish records. Since the above document is, in essence, a will more or less, there is probably some error in recording or transcribing the dates or this is not above ELEANOR. The son, Richard Cheney, mentioned above was most likely the twin as the elder son named Richard was deceased in 1704.

(The book Anne Arundel Gentry states that between 1643-1682 no female by the name of Chaney immigrated. That was incorrect. The front of the Early Settlers book shows that book Q was for the year 1658, so the 1650 date for Charity must be an error in typing. She is definitely shown as RICHARD's wife and RICHARD named a daughter Charity, so this Charity must have been his first wife. Since they had children born before 1658 in Md., it appears this could have been a trip home. Immigrated meant that they were able to pay their own fare. Transported meant that someone else paid their way.)

1726 May 14th The following Probates to the Will of RICHARD CHENEY heretofore of Ann Arundel County deceased were at the request of Thomas and Charles Cheney by order of the Honorable Thomas Addison Esquire one of the county generals Entered as follows: 1st John Jacob Senr. of ye County of Ann Arundel aged about ninety four years makes oath on Holy Evangelists of Almighty God that on the Sixth Day of March Anno Dom 1726 that he the said John Jacob Senr. happened to be at Coll. William Burgess and see a certain William Cocks write a will for RICHARD CHANEY since Deceased and that the said John Jacobs Senr. heard the said RICHARD CHANEY Say that he givd and bequeathed the plantation he then lived upon to his two sons Thomas and Charles and see him sign it as his last Will and Testament and that he the said John Jacob saw and witnessed William Burgess and William Cocks sign the said will as Evidences that he the said John Jacob saith that he never know of another Will made by the aforesaid RICHARD CHENEY nor ever heard that he ever parted with his land any other Way than according to that Will abovementioned and further sayth not.

I RICHARD CHEINEY SENR. of the County of Ann Arundel in the
province of Maryland being now in good health and perfect memory doe make this my last will and testament revoking all other Wills by me made formerly as Witness my hand and seale hereunder subscribed this sixth day of March Anno ye Domm 1685/6.
Imprimis. I give and bequeath unto my Eldest Son Richard Cheiney to him and his heirs forever all my tract or parcel of land called by the name of Cheiney's Rest lying and being near South River in the County off Ann Arundel aforesaid Containing by Estimation two hundred and fifty acres and my Will is that he possess the same immediately after my decease...Item I give and bequeath unto my two sons Thomas and Charles Cheiney all my Plantation whereon I now live called by the name of Resolution to be equally divided betwixt them only Ten acres of the said Land I give unto my wife during her life or widowhood but if she marry or dye that then I give the said Ten acres of land be divided alsoe between my two sons Thomas and Charles.
Item. I give and bequeath unto my three daughters Eliza, Mary and Anne each of them five shillings lawful English money to be paid them immediately after my decease.

I give and bequeath all the rest of my real Estate and personal Estate be equally divided amongst my wife and my two sons Thomas and Charles and my will is that my said sons Thomas and Charles Cheiney shall be at age and shall enjoy the Estate I have here left them when they shall become sixteen years old, alsoe my will is that immediately after my decease the two third parts of the cattle, hoggs, and horses be marked for my said two sonnes that when they come at age they may possess the increase thereof as well as principal, alsoe I commit into the custody of my said wife during her life or widowhood my said two sonns together with their estate till they shall become sixteen years old only expecting what is above excepted that is that the Cattle hoggs and horses be marked as above but if my wife dye or marry again my will is that immediately after her death or marriage my said two sonns alsoe their Estate herein mentioned be delivered into the Custody and to the management of my son Richard Cheiney and my son-in-law John Jacobs and his wife till they shall become sixteen years old and when they shall become sixteen years old my will is that what Estate I have herein given and bequeathed to them be delivered to them together with the increase of the Cattle hogges and horses if there be any this is my last Will and Testament. 29. Another story on ancestry about RICHARD CHENEY: RICHARD CHENEY III, born
1630 (1616), in Woolwich, London, England. He migrated to America in 1649, as
stated by genealogist Harry Newman, Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
"Harry Wright Newman, in his Anne Arundel county Gentry 91933), included a
chapter on this family in which he stated that RICHARD CHENEY, Sr. arrived in
Maryland before 1650,a single man; that he was twice married, but that the name
of his first wife was unknown. He also listed Richard Cheney,Jr., as the eldest
child of Richard, Sr., and his first wife, and stated that Richard, Jr., was b.
about 1649.
"A record (which will be given in full, infra), in the Hall of Records,
Annapolis, shows that RICHARD CHEYNEY and CHARITY, his wife, arrived in Maryland
by 1658, and without children. They were allowed 50 acres each, for their own
transportation in to the province. It is evident, therefore, that they came
after 1651, since for a period up until June 20, 1652 [Maryland Archives, vol 1,
p. 332), persons were allowed 100 acres each for settling in Maryland. One is
puzzled, however, by the deposition of their daughter Elizabeth (Cheney) Iiams,
who stated in 1775, that she was then 74 years of age, thus b. C1651, and
presumably in Maryland, since so far as we know, there is no record showing that
she was transported to the province. If she was b. in the province in 1651, why
then did her parents wait 6 or 7 years to claim the land that was due them for
their own transportation? "While we have never heard such a theory
expressed, it is our definite felling that RICHARD and CHARITY CHEYNEY, Sr. came
to Maryland from Virginia. They chose Anne Arundel Co.as their new home, and
this area was principally settled by Virginians. Also, RICHARD seems to have
been on especially friendly terms with William Burgess and William Cock(s), who
drew up and witnessed his will. William Burgess was definitely from Virginia,
and it seems very likely that William Cock was also. In addition, one Richard
Cocke, of Henrico Co., in Virginia transported into that colony before Mar 6,
1636 (among others) one Robert Cheyny [Nugest, op. cit., p. 54]. And, there were
other Cheneys in Virginia, as well as a few later ones in Maryland."

Maryland. Mary Cheney was born in 1654 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Anne
Cheney was born in 1660 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Thomas Cheney was born
on Mar 1 1668 in All Hollow, South River, Anne Arundel County, Maryland. He died

Sharon Doliante in her book" Maryland and Virginia Colonials" states:
RICHARD CHEYNEY, Sr. born ca 1630, died after March 6, 1685 (date of his will)
and before August 1 6, 1688 (date his estate was appraised) married CHARITY, who
probably died in the mid to late 1600s: married ELINOR (ELEANOR) who survived
him. On July 23, 1658 RICHARD CHEYNEY entered his claim for the land that he and
his wife were entitled to for the entry into Maryland. RICHARD CHEYNEY began to
purchase land soon after his arrival in Anne Arundel County. He resided on the
South River Hundred and soon became one of the largest land owners in the area.
Maryland rent rolls in 1707 indicate the ownership of 2820 acres. ------ RICHARD
CHENEY SR 1630 RICHARD CHENEY Sr. born.@.1630 London Middlesex England migrated
to America in 1649 as stated by Harry Newman: AA county Md. Listed Richard Jr as
first born son. Recorded in Md hall of records, RICHARD with wife CHARITY WOOD
arrived in Md 1650 from Va. They were allowed 50 acres each for settling in AA
co Md. Charity died...3-16-1685 Arundel Co. Md, USA buried All Hallow s
Episcopal Parish Maryland. To wife (unnamed) dower rights Test Wm Burgess and Wm
