SPENCER BOBO

1704                         King William City, Va. Elizabeth Bobo listed on Quit Rent Roles. Note: Apparently

Elizabeth Bubboe is again a widow with a bouncing baby boy, SPENCER BOBO.

Some researchers give him the name FRANCIS SPENCER BOBO but I have seen

nothing to indicate that Francis was part of his name.

1724                        I think SPENCER was married about 1724. A book, "The Garnett Family" indicates

that a family allied with the Garnetts, the Towles, intermarried with the Sparks and

Wartons and that SPENCER BOBO  married Mary, nee Taylor Sparks, the widow of

John Sparks. SPENCER did own land with Henry Sparks and he and his children did

interact with them for the next 50 years. Mary's daughter Jane was the second wife of

Stockley Towles. Could it be that SPENCER'S wife was named Mary Jane Taylor and

her daughter was named for her?

1730                        Absolom born in Caroline Co. Son of  SPENCER and JANE BOBO

(Caroline Co., VA  Order Book 1732-40 page 281).

10 Oct 1735            SPENCER BOBO served on a jury in case of John Garrott against John Yarbrough.

(Caroline Co., VA Order book 1732-40, page 311).

10 Oct 1735             SPENCER BOBO served on a jury in case of Mary Hobday against the estate of

William Dilling. (Caroline Co., VA Order Book 1732-40, page 313).

10 Oct 1735            SPENCER BOBO listed as jury member in case of Elizabeth Standard & Nicholas

Ware. (Caroline Co., VA Order Book 1732-40 p 311.)

circa 1736                "Petition of Francis Mikell. He has been appointed overseer for the road. He prays

deduction of some part of the precincts for it is a very great prejudice to him, being

so very large he is not capable of performing in due manner without injury in great

hindrance of business.  SPENCER BOBO, Richard Holkellm, William Holcomb,

John Holcumb, Henry Sparks, Zach. Sparks, Jno. Griggs, Stokely Towles, Thos.

1739                         Orange County, VA. Tithable list in precinct of  John Mickell Constable, shows

SPENCER (SPENTOR)  BOBO with only one in family. Note: In Colonial Virginia

tithable were all men and servants over sixteen years of age and slaves, therefore

SPENCER  had no natural son or adopted son 16 years or older living at home and no

                                 slaves.

1739                       Spencer Bobo, Jr. born. Son of  SPENCER and JANE BOBO.

1740                       SPENCER BOBO witnessed a Deed for Richard Halcomb & John Gibbs. (Orange Co.

                                VA Deed Books 3 & 4)

1742                         "On the Motion of SPENCER BOBO an evidence for  Isaac Smith at the suit of

1744                         "To SPENCER BOBO for two County Levys overcharged

in the year 1742...35." (Orange Co., VA Order Book 4, page 227.)

20 Sep 1749             Culpeper City, VA Deed Bk A pge 41, SPENCER BOBO sells to Robert Terrill 400

ac of land he bought from Henry Kendal on 1737 and Thomas Walker in 1743. Mary,

the wife of SPENCER, relinquishes her dower. Note: SPENCER has been farming 400

ac with the help of his children. I have found no record of this SPENCER owning slaves.

The children have apparently begun leaving home; the oldest boy should be about 24

years old. SPENCER'S needs are less and the ability to farm large acreage is reduced

so he sells off the big acreage.

21 Sep 1749             "SPENCER BOBO of St. Mark's Parish, Culpeper County, planter to Robert Terril of

same, planter. lease and release for f50 current money. 400 acres in parish aforesaid

15 May 1750            "James Barnett of St. Mark's Parish, carpenter to SPENCER BOBO of same, planter.

Lease and release; for f10 current money. 100 acres on the branches of the Robinson

and Rapidan...near the ridge between the Rapidan and Robinson Rivers corner to John

Medley...(release also describes the land as on the branches of Rappadan and Robinson

rivers near the Lost Mountains)" (Culpeper Co. Deeds, 1749-1755, pages 154-156.)

18 Oct 1750            "Richard Mauldin of Caroline County to SPENCER BOBO of Culpeper County, for f50

current money. 50 acres. part of a patent granted to Richard  Mauldin 1736...corner of

William Sparks...on Dark  Run Corner to Benjamin Powell...to the mouth of White Oak

Run. Acknowledged by R. Mauldin. Wit:  Thos. Sparks, William (X) Sparks, Benja.

Powell. Proved by Thomas Sparks, William Sparks and Benjamin Powell." (Culpeper

                                Co. Deeds, 1749-1755, pages 220-221).

10 Jan 1752             Culpeper City, VA Deed Bk F Pge 540, William Sparks Bonds himself to SPENCER

BOBO in sum of One Hundred Pounds Current Money of Virginia. The condition of the

Bond to "perform a Bargain formerly made that said William Sparks "doth agree

to give to the said SPENCER BOBO and Mary his wife the land whereon the said

SPENCER now lives containing Fifty Acres:. During their natural lives" or as long as they

want to live on it. One of the witnesses to this bond was Absolum Bobo. Note: This

seems to be the land Spencer purchased on October 18, 1750. Apparently William

Sparks is paying SPENCER 100 pounds for the property but agreeing to permit

SPENCER and/or Mary to live on it as long as they live or want to live on it.  Absolum

proved this bond in 1772 at which time title of the property passed to Sparks.

Neighbors William Sparks and Benjamin Powell were related to SPENCER in some way.

                               VA Will Book A, 1749-1770pages 173-174.)

26 Apr 1759           SPENCER BOBO brought suit against Thomas Gully for debt of 9s 7s 5p.

1759                       "The Attachment brought by Thomas Gully against the estate of SPENCER BOBO is

Dismissed." (Orange Co., VA Order Book 6, page 457.)

peach orchard near the head of a small branch...branch of the Robinson River..."

Acknowledged by Daniel Phillips and Martha (X) Phillips. "Wit: Benja. Powell,

Ambrose Powell, SPENCER BOBO", Culpeper County." (Culpeper Co. Deeds,

County, Virginia Court Papers 1744-1783", Weisiger.)

15 Mar 1764           "Ambrose Barnett of Orange County, SPENCER BOBO and MARY his wife and John

Barnett, SPENCER (x) BOBO, MARY (x) BOBO, John Gibbs. MARY was first

privately examined." (Culpeper Co., VA Deeds 1763-7, pages 435-437.)

21 Aug 1764            SPENCER BOBO failed to appear as defendant in suit by James Duncanson for debt.

Court ordered his arrest. Jos Stapp(?) and Anthony Foster his securities for the Debt in

the Declaration Mentioned. (Culpeper Co., VA Order book &, page 175.)

1764                       "Plt agt SPENCER BOBO...Deft. The day came the Plt by his attorney & the Deft being

solemnly called came not. Therefore it is considered by the court that the Plt recover

against this said Deft the Debt in Declaration mentioned & costs to be ascertained on

Enquiry by a jury at the next ourt." (Orange Co., VA, Order Book 7, page 215.)

1764                       SPENCER BOBO listed in rent rolls, Culpeper Co.

1765                       "James Dunconsom. Plt agt SPENCER BOBO...Deft. This day the parties by their

attorneys thereupon came also a jury...upon oaths do say that the Deft did assume upon

himself in manner and form as the Plt agt him hath declared and they do assess the

Plt Damages by Occasion of the nonperformance of  that assumption to Seven pounds

Eight shillings and one penny consent money besides his cost. Therefore it is considered

by the court that the Plt recover against this said Deft his Damages aforesaid in form

against assessed and his cost by him about his suit in this Behalf Expended and this said

Defendant in money and so forth." (Orange Co., VA Order Book 7, page 308.)

23 Jan 1769             "On the motion of SPENCER BOBO a witness for Jacob Medley agt James Maresden

it is ordered that the said Medley pay him sixty one pounds of Tobo. for one days

attendance at this Court & coming once out of Culpeper County Twelve Miles."

(OrangeCo., Order Book 8, page 20.)

21 Aug 1772           Culpeper City, VA Deed Bk F, pge 540, Absalom Bobo proves bond between William

Sparks and SPENCER BOBO and Mary his wife signed January 10, 1752. Note: I

think William Sparks was SPENCER BOBO'S stepson and that this legal action signals

the recent death of SPEN CER.

1775                        SPENCER BOBO in 1775 shows as an adjoining land owner in Craven Co. on Tyger

River on the plat of Ezekiel Backler--this indicates that SPENCER BOBO had bought

lands in that area before 1775.

Issue 3 September 1988

SPENCER BOBO was probably born before 1712, and appears to have lived all of his adult life in Orange County until Culpeper was formed from it in 1749. His land is described in several records as being on the north side of Robinson river near the mouth of Stony Run. Sometime before 21 Sep 1749 he married Mary (Mason)? Sparks, widow of William Sparks, and mother in law of Stokely Towles. His children, (by JANE) were Absolom (1730?), Lewis (1735?), Sampson (1737?), Spencer Jr. (1739?), and possibly others. We suspect that Simpson could be an incorrect name and might have been Moses. (living in Orange County in 1752, and born before 1732) John, (living with SPENCER in 1753), or Gabriel (will, 1790).

SPENCER BOBO, born in France came to Caroline County, Virginia, in 1698. He bought land in Orange County, Virginia, in 1737. The records show that Culpeper County, Virginia was formed from Orange County in 1748. The Culpeper County records show that SPENCER BOBO and his wife Mary, sold and leased property to Absolom Bobo and his wife Ann. They also sold property to SPENCER BOBO. The date of sale was 1758-1763. No further records of sales after 1772.

SPENCER BOBO and his wife Mary were parents of five children: Absolom, Simpson, Lewis, Sampson, and Spencer, Jr.

BOBO COUSINS BY THE DOZENS by Newell

p. 1 ...SPENCER BOBO, whose wife was probably Mary Sparks, made a number of transactions pertaining to renting, buying and selling land between 1737 and 1772. It appears that one SPENCER BOBO settled in Caroline County and then when Culpeper was formed in 1749 his property fell in Orange County. In the transactions he is also mentioned as living in Brownfield Parish and St. Marks Parish which appear to be near the Robinson and Rappadan Rivers.

40-3 - Is a list of many of the above mentioned Court Records, Deeds, Order Books, etc. listed on the first few pages.
