This indicates to me that Arthur died before 1798.   Also note the name of the district changed between 1790 & 1803.  I have searched all the Barnwell District records, but the Orangeburg District records are not yet on line, thus I was not able to see the administration or estate paperwork for Arthur Connaway – still no idea why Ann is not on the 1800 SC census.

Records of Barnwell County further proved that my direct ancestor Henry Conaway’s mother, and wife of Arthur Conaway was named Ann and that they spelled their last name Connaway in 1802.  The below docoument also proves that my ancestor Henry Conaway was the son of Arthur Connaway.

I have yet to find the inventory of Arthur Connaway referenced below, below but I am still going through records searching for it.

Barnwell. Journals 1800–1813, Court Records 1786–1791, Court Records 1800–1813, Journals 1800–1811 | Business Records 1775–1779 — Image Details — FamilySearch.org

This was from the court Thursday 1 April, 1802 – frame 45.  This was also referenced on frame 832.

Soon after this Henry Connaway went to Warren County, Georogia, where he married Nancy Turner 1806.  I am guessing this could be a request for his portion of his father’s estate for his journey.

Henry Conaway (b 1784) went to Warren County, Georgia, and married in 1806 Nancy Turner, daughter of John Turner who bought land in Warren County, Georgia in 1797. Henry may have known Nancy in SC followed that family to Georogia soon after John Turner, Nancy’s father, moved there.

Arthur Conaway exhibited a memorial to be registered in the auditor’s office – of a plantation or tract of 100 acres of lands situate in Granville County at Overstreet pond near the upper three runs water of Savanah bounded on all sides by vacant land – lands certified the 4th day of May 1773 & granted the 21st day of April 1774…the document of the land states that this survey was certified the 9th day of July 1771

I believe that Arthur Conaway was single at the time he received his land in South Carolina. This is based on the fact that he obtained a Plat for 100 acres in Granville County.  Between 1719 & 1775 South Carolina was a royal colony and land grants during this time were considered Royal Grants. The amount of land received after 1755 was based on heads of house receiving 100 acres plus 50 acres for every other member of the household. Based on this Arthur Conaway was single when he applied for the Plat of 100 acres.

Some Winton County Deeds Pp. 44-47: 14 Nov 1786, Arthur Conaway of Orangeburg District, planter, to William Weathersby, carpenter, (lease s 10, release L 50)?100 acres granted to Arthur Conaway, at Overstreets ponds, on Upper Three Runs Arthur Connaway (D), Wit: Frederick Lee (X), Abner McMillan. Proved by Frederick Lee, 29 Dec 1785. Recorded 1 Feb 1790 [sic].

According to the 1790 Census Arthur Conway was living in the South part of Orangeburg District, South Carolina. Records show that he was over 16 & had 5 males under 16 & 5 females living with him. One female was obviously a wife so he had 9 children, meaning he most likely married soon after he obtained his land grant.

There is no record of Arthur Conaway being on the 1800 Census.  I believe that he was deceased before 1800 & the some of the children of this famiy are found on the 1800 census in the same area.  Since his wife is not listed on the 1800 census, I believe she was living in the household of one of her sons.

It is possible that John Conway 1800 Orangeburg County, SC Census, aged 26-44 -  born about 1775 & died 1800-1810 was a son.   The census includes his wife & 2 other males thought to be brothers that were living with them:

1.       1m 10-14 thought to be Arthur Conaway b about 1790 d 1930-40.  Wife Sarah – no male children – he was on 1820 Barnwell, SC census living next to ?brother William Conaway.

2.       1m 16-25 thought to be William Conaway b abt 1786 SC d 1848 AL

Also believed to be sons of Arthur Conaway are Charles Conaway born about 1783 as well as Henry Conaway (my ancestor) born about 1784 SC and d 1858 Warren County, Georgia.  I believe they are the 5 sons of Arthur Conaway on the 1790 census.

Besides the matching autosomal DNA tests, Y-DNA tests that test male lineage show that 1 descend  from the common ancestor of  Charles Conaway, 3 descendants of Henry Conaway, and 2 descendants of William Conaway along with another Charles Conway that married Cloey Turner.  We all have a proven Y-DNA common Male Ancestor.  Several of the lines dropped the “a” and now spell their name Conway.

William Conaway (b1786) droopped the “a” from his last name and went to Russell County, Alabama, and had a large family there by 3 wives.

Henry Conaway (b 1822), son of Henry Conaway (b 1784) & Nancy Turner of Warren County, GA, dropped the “a” from his last name & moved to Russell County, Alabama to live near his Conway relatives – the children of

William Conway. Henry Conway married December 13, 1845, Adaline Jordan (b. 1830) in Russell County, AL, and they had 3 daughters. He was previously married about 1840 in Warren County, Georgia.

In 1790 some of the children of John Turner Sr were also in South part of Orangeburg District, South Carolina (Abraham, William, John, & Noel Turner) in close proximity to Arthur Conaway (i.e. nieghbors).

I am currently researching my Nancy Turner as being kin to either Sarah Turner, the wife of Noel Turner, or connected to Noel Turner in some other way.  I do believe that John Turner, Father of Nancy Turner, was on the 1790 SC census in Orangeburg County, SC, along with Arthur Connaway, and Noel Turner.  I believe there is a connection, but do not yet know what it is.  There is a Joseph Turner in some documents with Noel Turner in Orangeburg/Barnwell.  Joseph Turner is not known to be kin to Noel Turner’s family.  Through wills I have surmised that it is possible that there is a connection.

It appears my husband and I may have a 2nd connecting ancestoral line – that of the Lewis family that married into the Turners further down their line. I have a proven descent from the Warner Hall Lewis line.
