(23) JOHN BRIANT (Kendall, Kendall, Abraham) b. July 1750; m. LUCY, b. Groton, Mass, May 7, 1747, dau. of Joseph and Elizabeth (Martin) LAWRENCE of Groton and Pepperell. He settled with his father on lot 14 range 4. He was a selectman in 1783 and 1784, and constable in 1788. He was a Revolutionary soldier. (see record, vol. I.) He d. March 14, 1800, a. 49 yrs., 8 mos. His widow d. Nov 11, 1817, a. 70. children:

1. Anna, b. Feb 2, 1777; m. March 3, 1798, David, son of James Houghton. Lived in Jaffrey and in Albany, N.Y.

2. Lucy, b. Jan 17, 1781; m. Aug 29, 1797, William S. Kimball

3. Dorcas, b. Sept 11, 1782; m. Aug. 30, 1805, Moody Lawrence

4. John, B. May 22, 1785

p. 236-238 JOHN settled on the homestead with his father, and m. LUCY dau of Joseph and Elizabeth (Martin) LAWRENCE of Groton and Pepperell, Mass.  He d March 14, 1800, a. 49 yrs., 8 mos.  His widow d. Nov. 11, 1817, a. 70.  Had children:

1.    Anna, b. Feb 2, 1777; m. David, son of James Houghton, March 3,  1789; re to Albany, N.Y.; r. in Jaffrey, lot 9, range 6.

p. 42. The following persons appear to have been voters at the time of the organization of the town: JOHN BRIANT, Kendal Briant. (And 70 other men.)

p. 51-2 County Roads - Transcripts of roads...the one in 1783 reads, "From the road leading by JOHN BRIANT'S to Peterborough east of said BRIANT'S, by James Gowing's and Moses Stickney's, to Dublin line...

p. 53 Highways - ...to the road that lease to JOHN BRIANT'S lot 14, range 4, 1838.

p. 59 Ecclesiastical History - Meetinghouse - The owner of pew number 34 was JOHN BRIANT in the year 1780. There were 53 pews on the main floor and 25 in the gallery. JOHN BRIANT'S pew was on the front row, just to the minister's left, with a center aisle dividing the congregation.

p. 70 In 1778 the town voted 100 pounds for preaching, and chose JOHN BRIANT, Nehemiah Green, and Benj. Spaulding a committee to procure preaching.

p. 73 Members of the church at the time of its incorporation May 18, 1780: Kendal Briant and wife Mary (Martin), JOHN BRIANT, and 15 other men and 13 other wives. Only 3 of the men, including JOHN BRIANT did not have a wife.

p. 74 On February 1, 1781 the town voted the committee for hiring preaching...chose JOHN BRIANT,... to procure preaching.

Letter from John T. Bryant, 86 Charlonne St., Jaffrey, N.Hampshire, Aug 15, 1960 to J. Chester Bryant.

My wife and I went to the cemetery last night and this is what we found on the monuments:

JOHN BRIANT died Mar 14, 1800, was 49 years old.

Wife LUCY died at the age of 70

WILL OF JOHN BRIANT 1800 CHESHIRE COUNTY, NH LIBER 5 FOLIO 22

In the name of God Amen, I JOHN BRIANT of Jaffrey in the County of Cheshire and State of New Hampshire blacksmith, being weak in Body and considering the uncertainty of the mortal life and being of sound and perfect mind and memory, Blessed be Almighty God for the Same, Do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say.

First I give and bequeath to LUCY BRIANT my well beloved wife the improvements income and product of all my estate both real and personal from the time of my decease until my son John Briant arrives at that age of twenty one years then she is to deliver up to him my said son John Briant, the two third parts of all my estate both Real and personal except the household furniture which I give and Bequeath to her my said wife to dispose of at ?pleasure. And then she is to have the ?Eye and improvements of the other third part of all my estate during her natural life, and I order my son John to live with his mother and assist her in ??sarraying on Said farm until he comes to the age of 21 years, I also order my said wife to support and maintain Those of my children here afternamed until they come of age (viz.) Dorcas Briant, Polly Bryant and Sally Briant, and finally I leave A? to the discretion of my said wife to conduct toward each of them as she shall find it necessary or shall see fit.

Secondly I give and bequeath to Anne Briant Alias Houghton my oldest daughter Fifty cents that together with one hundred and one dollars and 79 cents she has already received make her full share of my estate.

Thirdly I give and bequeath to Lucy Briant Alias Kimball my second daughter Seven dollars and 70 cents that together with ninety two dollars and 30 cents. She has already received make her full share of my estate.

Forthly I give and bequeath to Dorcas Briant my third daughter one hundred dollars which sum will be her full share of my estate which sum I order my said wife (if she thinks it is necessary or circumstances Require it) to pay to her if my said wife's circumstances will admit of the same, otherwise I order my son John Briant to pay the same to her when he arrives to the age of twenty one years.

Fifthly I give and bequeath to Polly Briant & Sally Briant my fourth and fifth daughters Eighty dollars each which will be their full portion of my estate which sums I order my said son John Briant to pay to each of them when they arrive at the age of twenty one years of age.

Sixthly I give to my Sister Mary Briant the use of one bed and bedding that which she now uses also one chest and one chair during her natural life, and at her decease by order the above mentioned property to be delivered up to my said wife, or to my home. And further I give and devise to my said son John Briant the two thirds parts of all my Real estate laying and being in Jaffrey aforesaid together with the two thirds parts of all my personal estate (except the household furniture when he arrives at the age of 20 years and further at the decease of LUCY my wife give unto my said son John Briant the other third part of my Real estate together with the Remainder of the farming tools and Utensils for husbandry. To have and to hold the above mentioned estate to him the said John Briant his heir and assigns forever. The Stock that shall be the Right of dower to my said wife at her decease shall be divided equally between my three youngest daughters. And lastly I appoint my well beloved wife LUCY BRIANT together with Snl (?son-in-law) Rufus Houghton of Jaffrey aforesaid Gentleman the executors to this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made Ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament and hereby order my said extr to pay all my Just debts and funeral charges and to see that this my last will and testament be duly executed. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal this 20th day of February AD 1800.

Joseph Lawrence, son of Nathaniel and Anna (Scripture) Lawrence, was born at Groton, April 10, 1718; and died in Pepperell, October 10, 1757. He married Elizabeth Martin, who died in 1770.
