JOHN JAY BRYANT was a school teacher in New Hampshire before coming to the south. JOHN JAY married SARAH ANN ROBINSON in Coosa Co., Alabama. When they married, her parents gave them seven slaves. They never had more than around seven or eight. When the slaves were emancipated, they thought they were ruined financially. In Alabama he had a 50 or 60 acre farm out in the country from Rockford. He was also a blacksmith and ground grain - corn. Their house had a very long porch. JOHN had a picture of a church in New Hampshire with a cemetery around it. It was some of his folks. In 1838 JOHN JAY BRYANT lived and paid taxes in Montgomery,Alabama. Coosa Co., Alabama, 1860 census shows J. J. BRYANT was a Millwright. His Real Property value was $600, Personal Property value was $12,000. He was born in N. H. His wife ANN was a housewife born in Ga. (I believe this must have been VA. since all records indicate Va. and SARAH herself talked of Va.) They had 3 children all born in Alabama. Both SARAH and JOHN were Methodists, but all their children were Baptists. But she believed in immersion rather than sprinkling. JOHN was quiet, peaceful, hard to ruffle. He did not get upset easily. Tom and Sudie took after him, they had a lot of patience. Tom and Sudie were very close to each other. They thought the world of each other. Tom had a lot of horse-sense, was smooth. Sudie minded her own business, never got upset over other people's misfortunes. JOHN JAY BRYANT had a mushroom cancer growing in his ear. His son Dr. Tom Bryant operated two or three times, trying to cut it out, but it kept growing back and finally killed him. He was buried in a country cemetery south of Goodwater, about 2 miles from where he lived. The cemetery is one block from the intersection at Hissop, Alabama, by a Methodist Church called Concord Church. There is a Mason insignia at the top of his marker.All of their children had moved to Texas. After JOHN's death SARAH went to Texas to live. Oh, how she did hate Texas. She was old, and everything was so different. It was really sad. She complained of the weather and of nearly everything else. She went back to Alabama once or twice after she came to Texas. SARAH lived with her daughter Sudie Hagan in Whitehouse, Texas, after 1890 and prior to her death in 1896. She was from Virginia and always talked about Virginia. She was smart, and had a lot of sense, but was high-strung, a kind of aristocrat. She had black eyes that would "snap" at you if she became angry. She believed in work and in staying busy. She helped Sudie with the children, and she kept them busy--wouldn't let them rest. During the rains pebbles use to wash across the yard. Sarah Ann would have the children pick them all up, then of course, it would be the same thing after the next rain. SARAH ANN ROBINSON BRYANT visited some in Chandler, Texas. She was more kindly than Mary Jane Works Goggans. SARAH and JOHN JAY never accumulated much. SARAH ANN saved a little for a tombstone; the Hagans paid the rest and took care of the funeral expenses. She requested a plain slab or memorial. Mr. Hagan spent about $25 on it. She had heart trouble - an enlarged heart. She is buried in the Whitehouse Cemetery and her cemetery inscription reads - The links are breaking from the family band, but a chain is forming in a better land.JOHN JAY and SARAH ANN BRYANT left no will. Tom and Sudie bought Eddie and Mary's shares of the estate, then sold the land to someone in Alabama. They got only about $800 for the farm - $400 each.---------- JOHN J.
