Flood McGrue Richbourg & Mary Elizabeth Yarbrough

Family  History  written by Edwina Thomas in 1961 & added  to  in 1971 by Quata DeWitt Richbourg Conaway (Granddaughter of Flood  & Mollie):

FLOOD MCGRUE RICHBOURG's birthplace is listed as Atalla Co., Mississippi;  however, the way his family moved around, it  could have been one of several counties in Mississippi.

His  children  all tell of his service  in  the  Confederate Army; how he was shot twice in the right leg, during a battle  in Georgia.  Bleeding profusely, he crawled off the battlefield to a nearby  creek  and  splashed water on his face  and  wounds.   He claims this saved his life.

This  story  coincides  with the one  recorded  in  his  war records  in  the National Archives in Washington,  D.  C.   These records state that he was wounded severely in an engagement  near Peach  Tree Creek, Georgia, July 20, 1864.  He was a  patient  at Ocmulgee Hospital, Macon, Georgia.

His  marriage to Mary Hudson in January 1869, seemed  doomed to tragedy after the birth of their son, James M. in October  of that same year.  Mary died five months later.

In  1870  we  find  the widower and  infant  son  living  in Guadaloupe County, Texas.  He had packed up and left Mississippi, either to go with his parents or to join them in Texas.

At  the time FLOOD came to Texas, a pretty  blue-eyed  young lady, MARY   ELIZABETH YARBROUGH was staying with  the  Anderson Berry family in Guadaloupe County, Texas.  One day  while  horse back  riding  she chanced to meet a  tall  black-haired  handsome stranger,  who  came to her rescue, as she was  trying  to  cross Blanco River.  The water was unusually deep from recent rains and the  horse  became  frightened  and  refused  to  cross.    FLOOD RICHBOURG rode up to rescue the girl.  (Could this have been  the horse  he named for Robert E. Lee?)  So FLOOD and MARY  ELIZABETH YARBROUGH  or MOLLIE as she was called by the family, met and  on August 27, 1870, were married in Guadaloupe County.

MOLLIE and her younger brother, William, were born in  Rome, Georgia. The family moved to Texas when she was a little  girl, and there her brother Jack was born.  Her mother is said to  have died when MOLLIE was only 4 or 5 years old.  Nothing is known  of the heirloom jewelry, which was supposed to have been left MOLLIE by her mother.

The  young  couple lived in and farmed in  Kyle,  Hays  Co., Texas,  where their  1st 2 children were born.   They  moved  to Carlton,  Hamilton,  Co., Texas in the fall of 1874,  here  FLOOD homesteaded some land.  In some way, the land was taken from him, so  in the dead of the night, the neighbors helped them  to  move his personal property off the land so he would not be cheated out of  that too.  They took his split rails to a Mr.  Parson  Hicks, where  they were kept until Flood was ready for them at  his  new location in Erath Co.

He  became  a  prosperous farmer, a deacon  in  the  Baptist church,  and an active Mason, being a Worshipful Master  when  he died.

During  their last years FLOOD and MOLLIE lived in  Carlton, Texas.

About 1911, FLOOD bought a Buick touring car.  This was  the first  car in Carlton except for a cog driven car owned  by  the doctor.

FLOOD  had  always been head of the house and  some  of  the things  MOLLIE  had desired were not thought to be  necessary  by FLOOD  who was rather conservative.  One of MOLLIE's desires  had been  to  have a new home built on a lot they  owned  across  the street from the old home.  Soon after FLOOD's death MOLLIE  built herself a new home on that lot.  Her daughter, Ludie, and  family moved in with her and resided there as long as she lived.

One granddaughter describes her grandmother as a little ball of fire.  She told this story to verify the statement.  FLOOD had always  loved a beautiful blooming willow tree that was near  the windmill  in the back yard.  MOLLIE wanted the tree down  because it  obstructed her view across the back patch to a small  ravine.  FLOOD  would  never allow the tree to be cut, but soon  after  he died MOLLIE had the tree cut.

After  MOLLIE's death, the daughter who inherited the  home, sold  it  to a Hico man, Grady Hooper.  The house  was  moved  to Hico, added to and redone, and at this writing in 1971, is  still a very nice home.

FLOOD's  first  son James was a victim of epilepsy  and  was necessarily placed in a special institution for his illness.

Death of F. M. RICHBOURG.
(From  the  newspaper for Carlton, Hamilton Co.,  Texas,  Friday, Aug. ?, 1913)[very dim copy.]

Wednesday afternoon at exactly ten minutes past one o'clock, the Great God of the universe, sent his Death Angle to call  from our midst our beloved brother and neighbor Uncle FLOOD RICHBOURG.     Uncle  FLOOD  has not been well for some time  and  recently visited  the Clearance resort thinking possibly the  water  there would be of benefit to him, however, in this he was  disappointed and  returned home and was confined to his room four weeks  prior to his death.
No  one  has ever lived in our midst that could  claim  more substantial friends than Uncle FLOOD.  Everyone loved  him.   In the  death of this good brother, the church has lost one  of  its ablest  members, he being a devout Christian and Deacon for  over 30  years.   The community has lost one of  the  most  charitable agents  he being ever ready to administer to the wants of  anyone who might need his service.
Mr.  RICHBOURG was born in Attala County,  Mississippi,  May 18,  1842.  He was married to Miss May C. Hudson who died  a year or two.  To this union one child was born, James M. who died a few years ago.  In  1868 he came to Texas and settled in  Guadalupe  County, was married to Miss MOLLIE E. YARBROUGH in 1870, who still lives.  To this union eleven children have been born.  Eight children are still living.
Mrs.  S.  B. Everett, Carlton, J. W.  Richbourg,  Joseph  B. Richbourg,  Spur, Mrs. T. H. Hodges, Waldrop, Mrs. Joe  L.  Lary, Hamilton,  Mrs.  B.  G.  Thomas,  Carlton,  Clint  D.  Richbourg, Hamilton, and Mrs. W. C. Pratt, Weinert.  Bro. RICHBOURG moved to Carlton in 1880 and since that time has been an ardent worker for all that was for the best interest of our community.  His life is an  open book and to study it would do ones very soul  good.   He was  a kind and loving husband, and tender father,  a  charitable neighbor, and at all times since his conversion years ago a  true Christian  gentleman.  A pleasing peculiarity is of the sons  and sons-in-law,  daughters and daughters in law, are  all  Christian men and women, and every grandchild that had reached the years of accountability  are followers of the same God that is so good  to all of us.
Words  are  inadequate to express the many  good  things  we would say of this goof man.  In all the seventy-one years of  his life he had never had occasion to cause pain and  among  his fellow man.  He has repeatedly said he has never had occasion  to have trouble with any man.
We all miss him; he has lived among us so long that  without him  our little town and community will be  for  a  long time to come.  Although  Uncle FLOOD will never again be seen in our  midst ever willing to advise us of what be best yet his life will  ever remind us that it is not all of life to live nor all of death  to die.  The influence of his noble life will be living in the lives of others long after his mortal body shall have returned to earth from which it came.
The  remains were conducted to the Baptist  Church  Thursday afternoon  at 5 o'clock where an impressive ceremony was held  by the  Masonic Fraternity assisted by his pastor, W. J. Hicks,  and his  former paster, W. J. Briscoe, after which a large  concourse of friends winded their way to the silent city beneath the  hill, and amid a multitude of sorrowing friends and relatives all  that was  mortal  of  Uncle  FLOOD  was laid  to  rest  to  await  the resurrection morn.
In  extending our sympathies to the grief stricken  wife  and mournful  relatives and family       the beautiful  life had lived         assurance that if he but            this life           "In that land of the rising sun."

In Memory of Grandma RICHBOURG
(From the Newspaper for Carlton, Hamilton, Texas, Jan. 3, 1930)

In memory of Mrs. MARY E. YARBROUGH RICHBOURG, widow of  the late F. M. RICHBOURG, was born April 6, 1848, departed this life, Dec. 10, 1929.  Age, 81 years, 8 months and 14 days.
She  was married to F. M. RICHBOURG Aug 27, 1870.   To  this union  were born 11 children, all living except three.  All  were present at the time of her death  She was a member of the Baptist  Church  for  52  years.  In the home going  of  Sister  RICHBOURG another sweet beautiful life has gone home, but she has left us a legacy.   I  do not see how anyone who looks back on  her  memory without  feeling that there is such a life as a God filled  life.  The  church,  home and society losses heavily when  such  a  life takes its flight, but however there are many compensations.   Her many  friends feel sure that she is happier.  Rev. 14:13 "and  we are  all made better in heart and richer in soul when we  reflect on  her blessed life"  We know she found the secret to the  happy life  "Figs  do  not grow on thistles."  All  results  require  a cause.  She found the star that leads and the power that  guides.  The  center  of her life was Christ.  Phil. 1:21, "Her  will  had become His will, her life was not only like His life, but was His life."   In Him she lived and moved and had her very being.   Her "life was hid with Christ in God, and when Christ who is our life shall  appear  then shall we also appear then we  shall  be  also appear with Him in glory", Col. 3:34.
She had a Christian face.  It was calm, strong and  hopeful.  In  this age of doubting and disquietude, it is a boon to find  a fact indicating that a confidence in God had filled her face with a look of calm hopefulness.  A pure heart and a clear  conscience had  given her a countenance beaming with love which  looked  one square  in  the  face.  Yea, looked into the  heart,  having  the effect  of a loving rebuke which virtue always gives  vice.   She had  a  christian  courage.  It was not a factor  with  her  that others  did.   She  had the courage to do what  she  thought  was right.   She was a christian mother, a divine motherhood as  wide as the cry of human need.  This mother had a christian hope, sure and steadfastly anchored to that within the veil.  To her,  death was  not a door which shut out life, but one which opened into  a larger life.  Cor. 5:1.8.
Sister  RICHBOURG lived a beautiful life, died  a  beautiful death, and now since it hath pleased the good Lord to take her to himself  and to her loved ones gone before, and she  cannot  come back  to  us.   Many many lives that  remain  be  influenced  and blessed  by  her  godly life.  If any one  would  have  the  same prospect  in destiny, then accept her Savior as your Savior,  and her Home shall be your Home, sweet Home.
Funeral  services  were  conducted  by  the  writer  at  her request.
