James Yarbrough, who was the grandfather of Nathan Yarbrough had received a land bounty in Franklin County, Georgia. The father of Nathan Yarbrough, GROVES YARBROUGH, lived on this land for forty years. He and his wife were buried on this land. They had seventeen children, all of whom lived to be grown men and women. [History written by Nathan Yarbrough.] ---------- GROVES YARBROUGH was born in North Carolina. After the Revolutionary War, the family moved to Georgia to settle land granted his father for service in the war. The death of his father and older brother at the hand of Indians, sent the family to Spartanburg District, S.C. There it was that the children grew up and married. GROVES first marriage was to a Miss Chamblin of that district. To this union were born 2 sons after which the wife died. GROVES second marriage was to MARTHA LANGSTON. GROVES and MARTHA YARBROUGH came to Georgia from Spartanburg District, South Carolina, before the birth of their first child. They settled on the Little Broad River in Franklin Co. where they lived and died. They are buried there. There they reared the 2 sons by GROVE's first marriage and the 15 children MARTHA bore him. The land on which they lived and reared their large family, was part of a bounty land allowed his father for Revolutionary Service. GROVES served in the War of 1812, as an ensign under Pulaski at the siege of Savannah. He was the executor for the estate of James Yarbrough, his Father, in Franklin Co., Ga. in 1813. Georgia State Historian's records show GROVES YARBROUGH Commissioned ensign 211 District Co. Militia, Franklin Co., Ga. 8-14-1809. Rose wrote to the Georgia Archives requesting information on GROVES YARBROUGH. She received a reply from Mrs. J. E. Hays the State Historian. Mrs. Hays wrote that GROVES YARBROUGH had service in the War of 1812, which dated from 1784-1815, as follows: GROVES YARBOROUGH Commissioned Ensign, 211th District Company (Franklin County) Georgia Militia, August 14, 1809. She also wrote that GROVES YARBROUGH took out letters of Administration on the estate of James Yarbrough, Dec'd on Jan 13, 1813, as did David Payne at the same Time. In the REVOLUTIONARY RECORDS OF GEORGIA Mrs. Hays found proof of James's service. She also stated that James Yarbrough was granted 287 1/2 acres of land in both Franklin and Washington counties, on the certificates of Colonel Elijah Clark and Colonel Samuel Jack. ---------- Pages from the Bible of Nathan Yarbrough as sent to Frances Lockwood from Harvey Lumpkin of Oklahoma City (in the 1960's) who was married to Nathan Yarbrough's grand daughter. GROVES YARBROUGH raised two sons by his first marriage with Miss Chamblin. After her death he married MARTHA LANGSTON and raised fifteen children. Five Daughters and Nine sons, making Seventeen children. Names as follows vizt: Wiley and James W. by first marriage. Nancy, Silas, Nathan, Elizabeth, Catharine, Levina, William G., John, Sally, Jasper, Mary, and George N., O. H. P. & Lacy & Pinckney. GROVES & MARTHA YARBROUGH Emigrated from Spartanburg District S. C. before the birth of their first child and settled on Little River in Franklin County, Georgia where they lived and are buried. The land on which they raised this large Family was part of a Bounty of land allowed to James Yarbrough Father of GROVES for Revolutionary Services. In Deed Book MMM, page 131 Franklin Co., Ga, dated 13 August 1816, recorded 30 September 1816, we find that Elizabeth Yarbrough, daughter of James Yarbrough granted to GROVES YARBROUGH, both of Franklin Co., Ga. for $50.00 32 acres of land, her part of the above 287 1/2 acres granted James Yarbrough...entitled at his death as one of his legal heirs. (Note by Nelle M. Jenkins - From the above indenture we assume that James Yarbrough, at the time of his death had 9 heirs, as we have listed already.) State of Georgia This Indenture made this first day of October in the year of Our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and thirty Two Thomas Payne on the one part and GROVES YARBROUGH both of the county of Franklin and State aforesaid of the other part witnesseth that the said Thomas Payne & GROVES YARBROUGH has made and delivered to one David Rusler their certain promissory note having date the twelfth day of September 1832 whereby they the said Thomas & GROVES promised to pay to the said David Rusler or heirs the sum of Two hundred dollars by the fifteenth day of March next with interest from the date thereof for value received now for the securing the payment of said note and for and in consideration of five dollars to me in hand well and truly paid by the said Thomas Payne the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged the said Thomas has granted bargained convey and by these presents do grant bargain sell and convey unto the said GROVES YARBROUGH his heirs and assigns one Negro man named about twenty seven years old Together with all and singular the rights members and appurtenances whosoever to the said negro being in buying or in anywise appertaining to have and to hold said negro aforesaid unto the said GROVES YARBROUGH his heirs and assigns against the said Thomas Payne and his heirs and all and any other persons whomsoever shall and will warrant and forever defend by these presents Provided never the less that if the said Thomas Payne his heirs Executors or administrators shall pay or cause to be paid to the said David Risler his heirs or assigns to sum of money aforesaid to be paid when the same falls due and also all Interest that may accrue then (the said GROVES bring the security to said note according to the just and and effect of said note and of these presents then as will this present Indenture and the rights of therein conveyed as the said promissory note shall be null and void to all intents & purposes In witness whereof the said Thomas Payne has hereunto set his hand & seal the day & year first above written Thomas Payne SEAL Sealed and delivered in the presence of John H. Georgia Personally appeared upon one Thomas King who Franklin County being duly sworn deposeth and saith that he saw the within named Thomas Payne sign and seal the within Mortgage for the purposes therein mentioned and that he subscribed the same as witness and saw John H. It is my will that my soul and Body return to God who gave it. 2nd. It is my will that out of my property all my just debts be paid. 3rd. It is my will that after my debts are paid, my beloved wife MARTHA YARBROUGH have all my property to dispose of as she chooses. 4th. I hereby appoint James S. Gillispie my Executor to carry out the provisions of this my will. Gillispie Executor of the last will and testament of GROVES YARBROUGH late of said County Deceased and two of the witnesses of said will, to wit. James M. Carson and Milton N. Gillispie, which witness, being duly sworn depose and say that they saw GROVES YARBROUGH, the testator sign, seal, declare and publish the instrument not presented as his last will and testament, freely voluntarily and of his own accord, without any compulsion or influence whatever, that at the time of the Execution of the said will said testator had or sound and disposing mind and memory that deponets signed said will and witnesses in the presence of the Testator and at his special instance and request and in the presence of each other and saw David H.
