ROBERT WORD ROEBUCK was the only child of Willis Roebuck and Elizabeth Lemon. His mother died either at his birth or within the first year of his life in DeKalb Co., Georgia. He was still residing there in 1845 when his father petitioned the will of his Grandfather Robert Lemon. A copy of the petition follows this history. Perhaps there was a disagreement between Willis and ROBERT, because they went their separate ways. There was no indication their paths crossed again. ROBERT WORD ROEBUCK married MARTHA JOANNAH BARBOUR October 2, 1853, in Rome, Floyd Co., Georgia. They were residing in Calhoun, Gordon Co., Georgia on the 1860 Census. ROBERT was in the Hardware and Tinsmithing business with his son-in-law Patrick Henry Conaway in Rome, Georgia. Their place of business was between two rivers. Patrick Conaway's son, Herbert Conaway, told that containers of red paint used for painting barns were spilled over the contents of the hardware store during one flood. A couple of floods virtually ruined their business. Since the merchandise was destroyed, they decided to give up the business. They left with thousands of dollars owed to them and moved to Grayson County, Texas, probably about 1891. Herbert Conaway said they came on a train from Rome to Chattanooga to Grayson County--he was still nursing a bottle at the time. His brother James Monroe Conaway told how they loaded everything--even the stove--on covered wagons to bring down to Texas. They first stopped at Whiteright, Texas. ROBERT WORD ROEBUCK later moved to Tyler, Smith Co., Texas, and opened a tinsmithing shop. His son-in-law Patrick Henry Conaway took up farming. ROBERT lived in Tyler until his death in 1913. A story is told through the family that JOANNAH was to marry a wealthy man, but ran off on her wedding night to marry ROBERT. Her father made her sister marry the man. Her father never approved of ROBERT and disinherited them. ---------- R. W. ROEBUCK'S masonic records show that he was in Calhoun in 1856. It's not clear when either the Roebucks or Conaways moved from Calhoun to Rome. Probably both families lived there by the time of the marriage (1876) of Mattie E. ROEBUCK (1829-1913) Born in DeKalb County, Georgia, January 25, 1829, ROBERT WORD was the son of Willis and his first wife Elizabeth (Lemon) Roebuck. He lived most of his life in Georgia. He died April 17, 1913 at Tyler, Smith County, Texas. His wife was MARGARET JOANNA BARBOUR whom he married about 1853. She was born in Georgia, August 19, 1836, and she died at Tyler, February 9, 1899. In 1860, ROBERT was living in Calhoun, Gordon County, Georgia. He was a shirt and tie manufacturer. Subsequently, he moved his family to Floyd County, Georgia. They lived in South Rome. Here, he was a Trustee of the Second Methodist Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge. As R. W. ROEBUCK, he enlisted March 4, 1862 in the 82nd Regiment, Georgia Militia. A letter written from Calhoun, December 3, 1863, by him asked for an extension of his furlough as he was still unwell. And your petitioner in fact saith that the said instrument in writing is not the last will and testament of the said Robert Lemon deceased & ought to be set aside and declared null and void for the following reasons "1st because at the time of the execution of said instrument, the said Robert Lemon was of unsound mind and incapable of making a will, 2nd Because the said Robert Lemon never did sign, seal, publish & declare the said instrument as his last will and testament, 3rd Because at the time of signing said instrument the said Robert Lemon was wholly ignorant of its contents, the same never having been read to him or in his presence, 4th Because the said Robert Lemon was induced to sign said instrument by the fraudulent representations of James Lemon as to its contents, 5th Because said Instrument was procured by undue influence exercised by James Lemon, who was thereby constituted one of the principal legatees, wherefore your petitioner prays this honorable court to grant him an order, calling upon the said James Lemon to be and appear before said court, on the first Monday in March, next, to prove said will in solemn form and show cause if any he can, why said will should not be annulled set aside and declared void & your petitioner will pray do. W. ROEBUCK, under & by virtue of an Execution issued from the Justice Court of said County of Floyd, in favor of Lloyd Pinson against said R. W. ROEBUCK and the said J. J. Cohen having bill the highest bidder for the same and it being recorded off to lien as the purchaser at the sum hereinafter named. Now the said Joseph H. Lumpkin Sheriff is aforesaid in consideration of the promises & of the sum of Twenty five Dollars & to him in hand paid at and before the signing & delivery of these presents has granted bargained, sold delivered & conveyed & by these presents does convey unto the said J. J. Cohen his heirs & assigns the aforesaid lot of land in the Town of South Rome, Floyd County, Geo Known in the place of said town as lot No. 284 the same being on acre off of lot no 284 in the 23rd Dist and 3rd Section of said County Bounded on the east by J. J. Cohen North by B. F. Meeks: West cave Spring road West E. R. Lumpkin. To have and to hold said lot of Land to the said J. J. Cohen his heirs and assigns, in as full and lawful a manner as the said ROEBUCK might have done.
