WILLIS ROEBUCK (1803-1889) WILLIS WAS born in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, about 1803. He was a son of Benjamin and Mary (Willis) Roebuck. He died in Rome, Floyd County, Georgia, October 16, 1889, and is buried in the Myrtle Hill Cemetery, South Rome. About 1827, WILLIS left his native state and went to DeKalb County, Georgia. He married his first wife soon thereafter, but the date is not available due to lost records in that county. She was ELIZABETH LEMON, daughter of Robert Lemon. She died after the birth of her son and only child, Robert W. Roebuck, born January 25, 1829. Robert reported that his mother was born in Virginia when giving information for the 1880 and 1900 censuses. WILLIS, through his attorneys, petitioned the DeKalb County Court to have the will of Robert Lemon, who died December 21, 1843, set aside, claiming that the will produced by James Lemon was fraudulent in that ELIZABETH (LEMON) ROEBUCK, deceased, left an heir. WILLIS was living alone in 1830 in DeKalb County. His infant son was being cared for by others. He married late that year, in all probability, his second wife named Ruth, last name unknown. She was born in Georgia about 1804. She died in Winston County, Mississippi, between 1870 and 1872. On July 23, 1872. On July 23, 1872, WILLIS married Mrs. Sarah A. Davis in Winston County. Sarah was born about 1826 in South Carolina, according to the 1880 census. Sometime between 1845 and 1850, WILLIS moved his family to Campbell County, Georgia. At that time WILLIS was a miller. They did not remain in Georgia very much longer, for they were in Winston County, Mississippi, by 1852. His name is carried on the Tax Lists for Winston County beginning the next year. WILLIS left Winston County during the 1880s to be with his son who was a resident of Floyd County, Georgia, and died while there. All four of WILLIS's sons were in the Confederate service. WILLIS ROEBUCK, Winston Co. said he was the father of John S., dec'd, that he left no wife or child. done for purpose of collecting back pay due soldier killed near Denmark, Tenn., Sept. 1, 1862. Verona, Miss., Aug. 15, 1862. Mary Jane Roebuck, widow, of Winston Co. claimed back pay, Mar. 11, 1863. William S. Bolling test. in her behalf. They had: 1. Daughter Roebuck, b. ca. 1860 G2125 Martha Caroline Roebuck, b. ca. 1839; unm. G2126 W(illiam) Benjamin Roebuck, b. ca. 1842; Pvt., 1st & 2nd Cpl. Killed at Battle of Atlanta, July 24, 1864. ----------- WILLIS ROEBUCK was born in Spartanburg Co., South Carolina in 1803. It is believed he first married Beatie Lanford in South Carolina before he moved to Georgia in 1827. She likely died prior to the move westward. And there is no indication WILLIS brought any children with him to Georgia. WILLIS then married ELIZABETH LEMON, the daughter of Robert Lemon. The Lemons also moved to DeKalb Co., Georgia, from South Carolina. The marriage was likely in 1828, since their son Robert Willis Roebuck was born January 25, 1829. ELIZABETH either died in childbirth or soon afterwards, leaving only one child. This was stated in a petition filed by WILLIS ROEBUCK claiming inheritance for Robert Willis from his Grandfather Robert Lemon in 1845. A copy of the petition follows Robert Willis' history. WILLIS next married Ruthy in DeKalb Co., Georgia, in 1830. Ruthy was born in Georgia in 1803. They had 3 daughters all born in DeKalb Co., Georgia. The oldest was born in 1831 and the youngest in 1839. WILLIS, Ruthy, and girls moved to Mississippi between 1845 and 1855. Robert Willis Roebuck went to Calhoun, Georgia. Perhaps there was a disagreement between WILLIS and Robert, because at this time they went their separate ways. There is no indication that their paths crossed again -- even though WILLIS returned to Rome, Georgia, where he died in 1889. Sometime between 1870 and 1880 Ruthy died in Winston, Mississippi. By 1880 WILLIS ROEBUCK had married the widow S. A. Davis (in Winston, Mississippi) who was born in South Carolina. She was 20 years younger than WILLIS and had a son, I. C. Davis who lived with them. As mentioned earlier WILLIS died October 16, 1889, in Rome, Georgia, and is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery there. WILLIS married Ruthy about 1830. He was not listed on the 1840 Census, but there was a John W. Roebuck with statistics that could fit WILLIS and his family. Dianne Blankenstein thinks his name may have been John WILLIS ROEBUCK. Sometime between 1845 and 1850, WILLIS moved his family to Campbell County, Georgia. At that time WILLIS was a miller. Hide and Martha his wife of the county of Winston and State of Mississippi part of the first part, for and in considerations of the Sum of five hundred and twenty five dollars to us in hand paid by WILLIS ROBUCK of the County of Winston and State of Mississippi part of the Second part at and before the ensealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, have bargained, sold, aliened, assigned and conveyed, and by these presents do bargain, sell, alien and convey unto the Said part of the Second part his heirs, executors administrators and assigns forever the following described and designated tract or parcel of land, to wit. The west half of the South west gr. C running South twelve chains, wide in Township Fourteen, Range 14 East also SW 1/4 of section five except twenty two (22) chains commencing twenty two chains from N. Sanders that whereas I WILLIS ROBUCK of said county and state am indebted to Lindsey Woodward & Melts in the Sum of One hundred Fourteen and 99/100 dollars with interest from the 21st of February 1874 at A.D. per cent. per annum as evidenced by my promissory Note bearing even date with these presents and payable on the 1st day of December A.D. 1874. And whereas I am anxious to secure the prompt payment of said Note. Now, therefore, in consideration of the premises, as well as the further consideration of one dollar to me in hand paid by D. A. Sanders of said county and State the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged. I have this day bargained and Sold and by these presents doth grant bargain and sell alien and convey unto the Said D. A. Sanders forever all of the following described lands lying and being in Said County of Winston towit: NE 1/4 of section 27 Township 14 fourteen Range eleven (11) E containing 160 acres, together with all of the tenements and hereditaments unto Said lands appertaining. To have and to hold, Said lands, tenements and hereditaments unto him, the Said D. A. Sanders forever, but upon the following trusts and conditions: 2 our to retain and Enjoy exclusive possession of said lands, tenements and hereditaments until the maturity of Said Note, after which at any time, where thereunto required by the Said Lindsey Woodward and Melts or by the holder of Said Note the Said D. A. Sanders shall sell said lands, tenements and hereditaments at the door of the Court house of Said County, in the town of Louisville, at public auction for cash, to the highest bidder first given thirty days notice of said Sale, by posting the same at Said Courthouse door, and the proceeds of Sale, the said D.
