SEPTEMBER 1989 ISSUE Bobo information compiled from data available under the name of Bobo which is to be found in the South Carolina State Archived in Columbia, S.C.: 2. The family originated in France and was Protestant. It is said that the head of the family came first to England and thence into Maryland and on into Virginia. The Brothers, Lewis and SAMPSON are proved. There were other brothers and also sisters who came to America. The brothers, Lewis and SAMPSON came with the Wofford's, Posey's, Trail's, and perhaps the Rhodes and Rushes into the Spartanburg area some years before the Revolutionary War. All of these families came direct from Virginia but had first resided in Maryland along the Pennsylvania line. 8. He died in 1804 and his wife died in 1816, in S. C.P. 78 SAMPSON BOBO, b. 1738, France, came to America with brother Lewis and possibly others prior to 1762, moved from Virginia to S. C. about 1771, first S. C. record shows that SAMPSON was given a grant of land on Tyger River, Feb. 11, 1773, lived six miles from Cross Keys in Spartanburg Co., S. C. In Spartanburg Court, June 1785 he was listed as over seer from Blackstock's Ford on Tyger River to Musgrove's Mill on Enoree. He was certified for military duty in the American Revolutionary War, May 11, 1786, after the fall of Charleston and served in Brandon's Regiment. He aided in founding Padgett's Creek Baptist Church after the Revolution. In Claude Spart's History of New Hope Baptist Church, ... is recorded the following:"A plat of 1081 acres of land, made in November, 1809, of which 620 acres were laid off for the widow of SAMPSON BOBO, shows the approximate location of Bobo's Meeting House, it being situated about three-fourths of a mile west of Cedar Shoal Creek and not far from a branch. This location seemt to be the place where the first New Hope Baptist Church building was erected." Near the location of the first church Horseshoe Robinson hid from the British in the rock cliffs of Cedar Shoal Creek. The first house of worship was a very plain, log building.
